jeep nothing like a QUALITY 4 wheel drive none of that cheap wanna-bee 4x4 stuff. I bought my cherokee sport in march for 10,800$ it was a 98 with 68000 miles and was VERY clean with a hitch already mounted. i was looking the last few days in the paper and saw several 98 sports with "low miles" for 8000-9000$.

I'm serious man Jeeps might not me a hummer but I bet they'd kick a hummers butt for a daily driver. Course no matter what way you look at it the hummer is gonna kick your butt, more precisly your wallet in the "butt-pocket", when it comes to purchase, parts, repair, gas, tickets from cops just wanting to see what they look like up close

Give me till saturday and I'll show ya what coolness I wiped up for the stereo in my jeep... it's pretty cool considering it was less then 20$ in materials

in my opinion, and I am very biased(Family Ford Dealership), the best bang for buck would be a nice Early 90's Mustang GT(Fox Body) Get a nice 5.0, their easy to mod and look great!

Wow, I wish I had a budget like that for my first car. However, you don't need one and with a little searching and a little work you can EASILY find something great that will match your price range. I'm biased to American cars, especially muscle cars, so if you're into ricers you can stop reading right now.

I had a longer post written out, but my computer froze up and so I'm just going to throw down a quick list of cars you might want to check out. Good places to look for cars like these are Ebay Motors and http://www.cctol.com. For reference, I just picked up a 70 Chevelle that runs strong and needs a little cash, TLC, and swap meet visits to make it my dream vehicle -- for $2800.

            Check out these cars:

            68-72 Chevy Chevelle
            67-81 Chevy Camaro
            68-72 Pontiac Beaumont (Good Luck)
67-82 Pontiac Firebird (and Trans Ams)
69-74 Pontiac GTO (also check Le Mans)
            64-74 Ford Mustang
            68-72 Plymouth Roadrunner
            68-72 Plymouth Barracuda
            66-74 Dodge Charger
            66-74 Dodge Challenger
            69-74 Mercury Cougar
            69-74 Mercury Comet
            69-74 AMC Javelin
            69-72 Buick Gran Sport
            70-72 Buick Skylark
            60's Chevy Corvair
            69-80 Chevy Corvette (you can't afford pre-1969)

            Cheaper great cars:

            69-74 Chevy Nova
            73-74 Oldsmobile Omega
            71-72 Pontiac Ventura
            73-75 Buick Apollo
            69-72 Pontiac Acadian
            71-73 Chevy Vega
            71-75 Pontiac Astre (Good Luck)
            75-80 Pontiac Sunbird (Good Luck)
            75-80 Oldsmobile Starfire
            75-80 Buick Skyhawk
75-80 Chevy Monza (and Monza Spyder)

Chances are good that you might not even choose one of these cars, but I hope that you do. Most are plentiful if you look around, and many people don't realize how potentially great these cars are when restored/repaired. It's a short list I put together, and some dates might be a little off, but I think these are the best years for most of these cars.

Also note that even between years on many of these cars there are huge differences in the style, so if you happen dislike the way one year looks you might want to check into other models. I hope these makes a point that there is plenty out there besides what you see coming out today. If these gets any good feedback I'll repost and/or update the list.

            Good luck!

I say get a 90's honda or toyota.

              Either will be nice.

if you want a bit more luxury, get an ex, if you want a little less, get an lx, if you want something that is just economical, get a dx or cx.

I say go for that accord, my mom has a 96 accord ex, white, but it is flawless, and it looks really good with it's alloy wheels on it.

              and you'll have VEEEE-TECKH!!!!

I think you should forget about cars and get a crotch rocket...that is if your parents are paying for insurance. Thats what i'm doing...buy a brand new Ninja for like 9000 and they said they'd pay for insurance

jeez, no one said VW BUG! greatest little cars, and i mean the old ones, not the new ones!, first off, there tough, you can roll those suckers and come out fine. 2nd off, they flaot! so if you go over tht bridge, you can take a nice little boat trip. 3rd off, they handle well, and are actuaslly pretty cool cars. There also good with the insurance companies

I own a 92 Mustang GT Convertable and in the three years I've had it I've only had to replace the water pump and patch a few hundret dents from jealous ppl who can't have what I got.

My First car was a 82 Mustang and the only reason I got rid of it was because I had 4 cars at the time

They are definatly not a bad buy easy to fix yourself a good starter car. I was paying 80$ a month for full coverage on the 92 after I turned 21.... so it's not that bad. Gas milage on a unmodified early 90's stang is fair too 15-18 miles per gallon IF you are easy on the peddal. That's as good just shy of a V-tec's milage.

Oh yeah, one more thing, Ford actually used ALOT of parts for different cars. So if you need parts for that year mustang they are to be had at most junkyards for cheap. Heck E-bay sells the Airbag for 50$ because they fit every Ford car of that year.

Come to think about it... unless you really want the "new Look" I'd say they are a VERY good starter car.

                      *sigh* The Accord got sold
Ive been thinking I have two paths:

One:I get a cheap car that is very fuel effecient and economical. This would be the Civics, Cavaliers, etc. I would get this then later on after college I could buy a car that I would like. Wouldn't be very interesting but it would get me places despite its crappy apperance and cheapness.

                      or Two...

Get a car that I like now and would keep for a LONG time. This would be the muscle cars because of their sheer bueaty, power and chicks dig the car or a Accord, Integra, etc all riced out minus the stupid stickers, huge *** spolier, and most of the ugly big body kits which would last me forever since the car is great, not to mention chicks dig these cars too This would be the more expensive/"exciting" route.

                      So what to do?

Pontiac Grand Am. I got a 97 with 88,000 miles for ~$5,000. Perfect condition. They have a nice V6 (155HP IIRC), huge trunk for gear/subs etc, very nice to drive, decent fuel efficiency (one tank lasts me two weeks, and I'm not too easy on the gas pedal lol), and look nice.

If you want economy, find a honda with vtec-e. VTEC-E was a super economical engine that honda made for a while, stopped, and now its on the newer civics, which makes the civics slow as hell, but hey, its for the fuel economy. What it does is, when you aren't gunning it, it only opens 1 intake valve.

but otherwise get a nice sporty integra. white or red, both would look really good.

yeah chicks love cars, I lost my virginity just because of my integra. [/end sarcasm]
