My kid totaled his car last night....

Less than three miles from returning home from taking his GF home.

Yep... he ran off the road and hit a steep bank and then traveled about 100 yards more before tangling into the guide wires of a power pole. Snaped one of the guide wires and it flew up onto the power line and knocked the power out. The two gide wires almost cut half way into the front ot the car. Its totaled. No way around it. He says another car entered his lane and he swerved off to avoid and then over corrected coming back. Over correction is a common mistake but its almost natural reaction. However since the other car stopped but then kept going there is no way to substantiate it so he was ticketed for driving to fast for conditions. Thats a 2 point one so not as bad as it could have been worse. The chances of a 16 1/2 year old winning in court are probably not good especially since he realy cannot identify the other vehicle so we gonna have to eat it. I am uncertain if my Insurance goes up with this one or not. He is relatively unhurt except for a bloody fat lip. Air bags deployed which hit his face but probably kept him alive and in the car.

I got to be thankfull that he is not hurt. It coulda been much worse. I will try and get some pictures up later today. All in all he is an excellent driver. Passed his written and practical on first tries first day he was eligible. And this place is tough on teen drivers. As they should be. He is one of the few I know of that has passed first time out. And he always drives the speed limit. Apears he was last night too. He has a lot of behind the wheel experience too. He has had this car since he was 15 and has a year and a half experience with no ticker or problems. Drives every day. But...one moment of panic and overreaction in a split second and you have lost it. Seems that is what happened here. he should have been able to keep his vehicle under control. Thats the law. So you kids take a lesson. You can lose everything in one split second and even your life. You have to stay alert and you have to react FIRST by taking your foot off the gas and stepping on the brakes. He and I had many talks about this. And this is the number one cause of accidents is trying to just steer out of a problem. That is the most common mistake and he knew it when he called me. First thing he said was I swerved and over compensated. Even though he had rehearsed it many times in his mind his instinct was to swerve. Once you start into that your doomed. He knew it but did it anyway. And knows he screwed up the moment he started it.

My father in law owns a body shop so he came out and towed it to his place. I gotta go by there today and I will get some pictures up. I had just put all new tires and had a complete rework done to this car for him for Christmas. Ain't that the way?

So I will now be going and dealing with all this today. It was fully insured but now the real loss is the deductable was high ($1000) and I owed $3400 on it still. I will be lucky to get the note paid off and then get 2 grand outa it to buy him another one.

    Pictures later...

man that really sucks. it sounds like it wasnt even your sons fault and he was driving responsably. He just had a stroke of bad luck. It could have been a lot worse though. Thank God for airbags..

sorry man, hope it works out

Hey Phil, glad to hear he wasn't hurt. I have one question though, what "conditions", I mean you're in the south right? South Carolina does't have any "conditions".. if you want "conditions", come up here to CANADA!

Phil I am VERY glad that your son is alright! I'm sure this one will stick with him the rest of his life, and the hopefully the same mistake will not be made again. Live and learn as the saying goes. Loseing it in a split second is all too true. My friend and I witnessed an accident directly in front of us that to this day still is burnt into my mind and sometimes comes back to me in nightmares. But at least this one did not end like the one I witnessed.

I got into a fender-bender (well it only bent my truck fender, the back of his car was a whole nother story) becuase the guy zipped in front of me in a exit lane heading to a ramp. I was maintaining my safe distance and he just squeezed into it. Then the whole ine of cars hit their brakes and I couldn't stop in time. Got cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance. I should have fought it, but I was young and stupid.

The good news was my insurance didn't go up, and the damage to my truck was less than the deductable, so i just fixed it myself.

Sorry to hear that bro, but just remember it could have been worse. His Girl Friend could have been in the car also, or the airbags mite not have opened. I hope your able to get it paid off and get him a new one, and I'm glad he is okay. Good luck bro.

glad to hear caleb's all right. that sucks about the car though. i had an idiot pull into my lane just last month. it had just started raining so the roads were very slippery. don't you love when you're doing 50 mph and somebody pulls right in front of you and does 15? drove me right off the road. i hit the brakes but because the road was slippery i started sliding without really slowing down very much. so i had to steer myself off the road. i stopped as soon as i hit the grass and got some traction. still ended up facing backwards though. jerky kept driving.

well thank goodness your son is all right. its too bad he couldn't identify the car for the police report though. the other driver could of been drunk or under some other kind of influence.

as for your insurance, i can only speak from my own experience from being in accidents while a young driver. my first car was my sister's old car, and i only had liability on it so i really couldn't do crap when i had an accident. my second car is when i got full coverage, my premiums have all ways been high, even under my mom's policy. the insurance co. didn't threaten to drop my mom or me even after all my accidents(not all major), but the premiums still remained double the amount of my mom's. the only times i heard of an insurance co. dropping someone is if they constantly get into major-ish accidents. a friend of mine has a daughter my age, her daughter in the span of like 6 months right after she got her license got into i think 3 major accidents. literally when the car got out of the shop, it was in a accident within a week and went right back into the shop. the insurance co. threatened to drop the whole family unless her daughter was not on the policy and they even had to get a notorized letter saying her daughter can't even be a passenger in either her or her husband's vehicles. for the next three years she had no accidents or tickets, and when she bought her new car her insurance was cheap. another guy i knew while i was in college was dropped from his insurance practically every month. that boy attracted major accidents like flies to poo. it got to a point that the new insurance co. would only insure him if he put $10,000 (yes, thats 4 zeros) up front for his coverage.

Much of the Carolinas and other parts of the South got hit with a few inches of snow yesterday.

Thankfully your son is ok, and also something to look at is that no one else was involved (meaning no one else wrecked their car) so you have only your son's car to worry about, not someone else's also. If you haven't already, maybe check the area and see if they have the traffic camera's up anywhere, maybe it could be used to see what happened with the car that swerved him off (not sure though if people are able to attain these tapes though).

I have seen first hand through my brother and sister how teens can be treated with tickets and accidents. Unless there is like outstanding evidence in the teen's favor, it's almost always likely to go against the teen (this has happened with all my brother and sisters tickets and accidents). And through this their insurance sky rocketed, but this was cause of numerous incidents. I'd personally suggest talking to an attorney, because they can help tremondously in getting points reduced or even taken away all together. My sister had to get an attorney to save her license, which he did. The attorney may also be able to get the points dropped altogether because of the winter conditions in the South and the poor conditons of many roads (take pictures of the scene if this could help in your favor).

Hopefully, everything works out for the best and everyone is ok after everything is all said and done.
