AO: We are back from the dead... again! After an 18 day outage, we are finally alive and well. Who knew how complicated updating software/databases from 2008 would be. I still have alot of tweaks to make, but my main goal was getting everything patched and updated to 2026.
Vbulletin 6 has changed alot since 2008 so we will have a ton of new features to dig into.
I've been watching alot of CNN's war coverage. Some of the M16s the soldiers and Marines are carrying have a rectangular box near the muzzle. Any ideas of what this is? Here's a picture, unfortunately the only one I could find...
Could be lots of things. The M4 (carbine version of the M16A2) has front handguards that are made to accept a number of sighting or designating systems.
If it is square, it may be a laser range finder, or flashlight, or IR flood-light, or red-dot scope, or a nintendo game, or a telescopic sight.
Originally posted by johnny dee this has nothing to do with the guns, but isnt it noticable that were wearing jungle bdu's in the desert. just thought id point that out in the pic.
actualy they are called woodland. and if its northern iraq then it makes sence the north is some what green
and im pretty sure those guys are marines by thier boots unless the army has them too.... but i can wait till the new digital camo gets to all the marines.... then itl be easy to tell the differance

I'm trying to figure out why the guy on the far left has a non-regulation haircut, unless of course he's SF but that doesn't explain why the other two have no hair. Anyone have any ideas?
they are marines you can tell by teh undershirt, and yes those are regular old militray desert boots(i have two pair) and that hair cut is well within regs, i wont go into it but hairstyles greatly differ from the bald head and high and tight

You might be right in that he might be SF. And it wouldn't be too odd for an operator to be teamed up with a bunch of regular joes.
Actually, if these are marines then he is most likely with Force Recon if he is "special forces". According to my younger brother, who has forgotten more USMC lore and facts that I will ever know, Force Recon is the only group within the Marines that are considered "Special Forces" whereas the Army has SEALs and other types of teams. IF you look back to 1993 in Somolia there were plenty of Delta operators mixed in with the regular Rangers. The Rangers all pretty much had tan heads because of their almost bald haircuts but the operators heads were all white because they were allowed to gro whteir hair beyond regs. They were often out in the field trying to gether intel and need to blend in.
As for the box on top of the RIS handguard on the M4 carbine, yes, it is in fact a night vision laser sight. Those things are so cool.

Those guys look dead tired, got any more pics? or whered you get that one... I cant seem to find any pictures really, just bombs blowing up, i wana see our ground troops.
itsn't amazing how we can change subject from guns to hair cuts...and any way on that m16 i think that is a flashlight or laser dot sight...kinda of like this one
Not exactly sure but I sent off a price quote to a buddy of mine who deals with this. Now, off the bat I would like to say that I am not sure if they are legal for citizens to own.
I know, I know. "But it's just a laser. I can have night vision, I can have lasers, why can't I have a night vision laser". Probably due to the same reason that prostitution is illegal. It's legal to sell, it's legal to have consentual sex but it's illegal to sell consentual sex.
Just an FYI for ya.
