    No Backpacks in schools?!?!?

Ok, So I work in an office supply store.

Today I had a customer come in and ask me for the most heavy-duty 3" binder that we carry. I showed them what we had and asked them why a 6th grader needs such a huge binder for.

Well, apparantly, kids in middle schools aren't allowed to carry around backpacks inside school anymore. They're only allowed to go to their lockers like twice in a day or something like that.

I haven't been in a middle school or highschool since 9-11, but is this REALLY the case in a lot of schools now? It's rediculous. A middle school student probably hasn't even had the chance to get brainwashed by islamic extremists anyhow. We're not talking about inner-city ghetto schools either. I live and work in a pretty ritzy area; Bill Gates doesn't live too far away.

Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% for safety in public schools, but this is just stupid. Besides, I'm sure you could fit a gun/c4 vest in a 3" binder anyway.

No backpacks and you can't go to your locker...hmm...sounds like half the story.

I don't understand why you even need a backpack if you have a locker. You need your book, a notebook, and a pencil for class. Took me 30 seconds to get to my locker between classes. Those kids carrying around half a dozen books all day need to get a clue.

That's a odd rule..Wonder why they did it... is it really for saftey? Does that school have a problem with stuff?

        Restola..
Depending on what their schedual is like... going to the locker could be more then a 30 second hassle..

EsPo, yea I remember that! It was in like 3rd grade and stuff. It was just when they new style of hanging it on one shoulder (Sp? I can never get that word right..) was starting. And we were'nt allowed to do it because it was going to make us crooked lol.

I graduated HS in 1994 and all during jr high and HS we could not carry back packs around. Now going back to your locker was up to you, but you only had 5 mins to get to classes. We were also not allowed to wear any sort of jacket or coat to class either. This is what you get for going to a school where shootings (or at least guns) were not a rare thing.

This is why the locker sharing program I started in 10th grade came about. You gave friends the combo to your locaker so that they could keep some of their books closer to their classes.

Been like that for a few years. Back when My kid was in middle school it was the same thing. And he is a Senior HS now.

You must have gone to a small school. It would take at a brisk walk 5 mintutes to get from one end of the school to the other and that's not including floors. My HS was 4 floors, so if you had say Drafting downstairs in the "Basement" and then the next class was Chemistry which the science rooms were on 3rd floor, then it took you over 5 minutes to just get there. Since you had 5 mins to get to class, you had no time to stop at a locker.

Ive never been not allowed to carry a backpack. And I used one in high school, more people did, we went to our locker three times a day usually although there were no limits. Once in the morning (got books for up untill lunch), once at lunch (got books for after lunch to the end of the day) and once after school.

Yeah thats a good point. I did go to a small school (my graduating class was 198). Always seemed though that my schedule worked so I always had to go past my locker at least every other class.

back when i was in middle school they told us it was a fire hazard. since there's noplace to put your bags once you get to class they end up on the floor and in the aisles. if there was a fire people would trip over them.

Yeah, back when I was in middle school we weren't allowed to carry back packs to class either and if we were going to wear a coat to class it could only be a windbreaker. The school was majorly afraid of kids hiding guns or other weapons in them. I guess I could see where they're coming from seeing how there used to be major gang problems at that school before I started going there.

That's exactly the way it was for me at my middle school, which was before 9/11. No backpacks between 7:30 and 2:15 (or whatever the school hours were), and you could only go to your locker like after 2nd and 5th periods, or something stupid like that. And none of the administrators could really ever explain WHY.
And we're also in a pretty nice area.
