He11, we didn't even know what backpacks were when I graduated from Ritenour here in St. Louis in '71. Only thing we had to put up with was the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) - a left wing group that all of the flower children belonged to and the Black Panthers.

LOL Ritenour ... that is a school name I didnt think I would ever hear on this board ... I had a couple friend graduate (or finally let go, depending on how you looked at it) from that school.

i wish i had time to go to my locker. i have 6 minutes between classes but the school is freakin huge. you have to go outside to do anything. dayspring knows what im talking about. the high school in bridgewater is too spread out. so i have to carry a backpack. its either that or hold 7 notebooks a textbook and a gym bag.

Hmm...my graduating class was 475 and that was one of the smaller classes. We had over 2000 students in my HS and that was just 10th, 11th, and 12th.

When my HS was built it was designed to hold over 4000 students as in the early 70's there were over 1300 students in a graduating class. So the school is really big.

It is kind of a huge pain in the butt when your locker is on the upper level of the school and your classes on are on the lower level. I don't have enough time to go to my locker inbetween classes. In my backpack I carry(on a regular day) 2 one inch binders, 2 three subject notebooks, American Government text book, Statistics text, and the 5 books(Madame Bovarie, Nortan's Anthology of World Masterpieces, The Stranger, The Conquistadors, and the Canterbury Tales) I am required to read, and my laptop. Wieghting in at just over 60 pounds! My graduating class is 378 kids and just over 1600 in the school.

My locker is on the fourth floor, 2 of my classes are on teh first floor, 4 on the second and one on the third. There is about 1800 kids in my school. I've never carried a backpack from class to class in my high school career. I make it from the first floor to the fourth to get books to the second in less than 3 minutes.

What I don't understand is people carrying packpacks around college. I can understand if its raining or somthing, or going to a class that you need a ton of stuff for. But for a notebook, textbook, and a few pens it seems like real overkill.

                            Same.

I go to a rather large highschool as well, no backpacks would make it nearly impossible to get some materials between classes. There's 2 floors and several portables around the outside of the school. And there's no way I'm carrying 3+ textbooks, binders, pencils, a calculator, + other things classes may require without a backpack in halls so crowded you can barely move.

I havnt carried a bookbag since 4th grade, but its by choice, I dont bring any books home and me and a friend traded lockers so we could be closer to our classes. I honestly dont know my schools policy on bookbags, the lockers are pretty much too small to put a bookbag in though.

When I was living in New York, kids in high school were not allowed to use backpacks and because the amount of books they carried caused back problems and one kid had it so bad, he really hurt his back so his parents sued the school.

But down here in the Dirty South, backpacks are used by 3/4 of the kids in my high school, the other kids just go to their locker, like I do.
