I am seeing alot of filter rapeage. Filter rapeage is not a good thing. It makes stuff look cheap because filters are cheap. Altough plastic wrap might look kind of cool it is still at the same time very cheap looking. Most of these peices I can pick apart and name nearly everyfilter used.

If you are new to photoshop then it is ok to start out that way but it really isn't the way to go.

Some of the tools you need to learn are the:
-Pen tool, great for making selections.
-Brush,airbrush, pencil, these can make some of the best --effects around.
-Opacity, you normally don't want all your objects to be the same opacity so play with this.
-Blending change (color dodge, luminosity, hue/sat), nearly everytime you make a layer you should adjust all of these to get the exact look you want. Sometimes the changes are sutle but sutle is ussually better.
-Blending changes (inner shadow, outer glow, bevel, gradiant overlay), these efects can save your *** sometimes. They are very easy to use. Just remember that just because it says glow means you have to use a light color; try changing the mode to multiply and use a dark color.
-Patterns, if used right these can add alot. Don't over do these.

Those are just a few of the tools beginners need to use to learn. I will make a few examples useing NO filters, except for maybe add noise and blur.

See you can make kinda neat stuff without filters.

filters can make some nice stuff if you add in what your saying. correct filters + blending effect and opacity and a little brushing can look nice

good patterns: grids, scanlines (vertical and horizontal), dots (hard to make it look good if your new), and sometimes custom pixel patterns can look nice.

remember, i think most of the stuff here is gonna be abstracts, which are generally all filters. what you made is more on the basis of a web interface, where filters are much less used.

The abstract wall paper I posted didn't have very many filters. Maybe just like noise and blurs.
