Shartley, I can completely understand your initial worry and concern, and wanting to follow up on it.
However, you are under the assumption that your child is being assaulted. There is too many unknown facts that could be happening. Sometimes the best action IS to ask questions, then call the cops later.
It could have been a playful act, we're kids, we fool around pretty rough.
Even on your own lawn, how do you know who started it. For example, your child could have punched the person. In retalition, they could have been thrown against a car, which is not too phyiscally damaging. It's more of an action to show that the other person is in power, and they could be getting a verbal warning to stop it "or else"
etc etc...
There's always the 'better safe than sorry' way... but you seem to be reacting too soon without thinking yourself. Again, maybe that is a good thing because of your concern.. but I think that a small cool down period is needed to think the situation over before going to the cops. I could be wrong, but I'm under the assumption your fingers were itching to call.
For example, a while ago I accidently stabbed someone. There was quite a few people around, who saw the action of me thrusting a knive into another guys leg. Anyone of them could have called the cops, and he could have ran away (Or tried) and done the same. However, everyone was cool about it. People approached me, took no immediate action against me, and asked WTF I was doing. I stated it was a pure accident, I was playing around with my knife (I learned they are not toys the hard way) and he decided to walk right in my way from nowear. I was at fault as much as he was. He said he saw me fooling around with it, and I was... well fooling around with it. I did check to make sure no one was around when I started, but.. that doesn't make my action ok.
The cops could have been involved, assault could have been charged, and it could have been a hell of a day. Instead, we worked things out between the two of us.
Things are not what they seem. There's ways to solve things without crying to someone else to solve your problem. It may be their job, but a cop doesn't need to come solve every problem you face. I only think they need to be involved when one side of the party is either completely insecure of themselves, or a dishonest person.. in which case they should be involved.
