Violent crime would go down, but Cons and theives that sneak around when nobody's home won't be affected. In fact, they would proably go up because it would be easier than dodging .45 and .3030s coming your way.

I'd think down as well. Criminals prefer unarmed, preferrably helpless, victims. Think about it - if you're percieved as a victim, you'll become one. If you're percieved as someone nobody wants to mess with, then only the foolhardy will. When was the last time you heard of someone trying to rape a female pro wrestler?

I got a handgun not to long ago and I just got a CCP, not because of people (people I can handle) but because me and my kid are getting more into hiking and outdoor fun.
About a month ago we were out Geocaching and we were being stalked by a cougar, nothing happend but I sure would have liked to have a pistol on me in that situation.
So now when we are out I am ALWAYS packing.
Washington laws are great, $65 for your first CCP and is good for 5 years then $35 to renew it.Comment

Down. And it's how I'd like to see society work, though I know it's unlikely to happen in my life time...especially here in Canada.Comment

Well as far as I'm concerned crime rate would go up, considering that manslaughter and homicide are both crimes. People can't just go around shooting people to solve their problems. Even if I know you have a gun, what's going to stop me from sneaking up behind you, pointing it at your head, and disarming you? What the hell are you going to do then? Not every idea is free of holes. While I can see why someone would think of this idea, it's just not going to solve anything.

People don't kill people because they don't have the means."What we have to accomplish at this time is all the more clear: relentless criticism of all existing conditions, relentless in the sense that the criticism is not afraid of its findings and just as little afraid of the conflict with the powers that be."

Why would crime rate go up?
There are hundreds of ways to kill without a gun, and besides most people that would kill with a gun already have one. (as in the bad guys)
If everyone had a gun it would just even the odds a bit.

Care to try that? One of the things we practiced in martial arts under the United system was gun retention :) - you might get really lucky and catch me unaware, but somehow I dont think its too likely."Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. There are several books that have been written regarding this subject. One, 'More Guns, Less Crime' was intended to support the anti gun campaign. The author found evidence quite the contrary to his original premise. He found that the more armed the 'regular' populace the less occurances of violent crime.
He is now a proponent of private firearm ownership.Comment

Its very unlikely "everyone" would carry a gun.
If perhaps 1-10 carried I would expect crime rates to drop significantly. Everyone will benefit, even those who refuse to carry a weapon. But I pity the liberal fool who announces her unwillingness to carry while in a bad neighborhood.Last edited by Restola; 04-24-2004, 01:23 AM.Comment

Whats going to help you now, without being allowed to carry a gun? We can all think up scenarios where having a gun wouldn't help (how about while floating in space?) In other words, your aguement is worthless.Originally posted by darklordEven if I know you have a gun, what's going to stop me from sneaking up behind you, pointing it at your head, and disarming you? Criminals have guns now.Originally posted by GinjirokuYea but the criminal would have a gun too.
what?Originally posted by BrakUp. The criminals themselves would simply stop hesitating because the other person has a gun. Owning a gun is one thing, being one to shoot it is a whole different story. And the people who would be the ones getting raped, murdered, vandalized, mugged would then go out and commit crimes themselves, becuase now they have a gun and since the people committing the crimes in the first place had guns they also have a liscence to kill
...is not having a gun the only thing that's keeping your jr. high butt from raping and murdering people?
Your post shows a complete lack of thought on this subject.Comment

many gun owners, not counting the very enthusiastic and knowledgeable gun owners on this website respectively :), dont know how to properly handle and shoot their guns. Even in the event that they were confronted with a situation in wich they could use their firearm, I believe a large majority would hesitate and probably get themselves shot first. Even if you have a gun, you dont pull it out when a criminal already has the draw on you from five feet away with the clear understanding that he will shoot you if he has to...this ain't the movies.
Being proficient and accurate with firearms is a SKILL that DEMANDS constant practice in order to be effective. Even most of the guys here would probably concede that the average american gun owner would'nt commit to this practice either because of lack of time or interest. I like shooting guns but for most busy people it would just be a hassle in their daily lives. Most people are buying guns for the FEELING of security, without understanding the commitment it takes to actually achieve security.
It would probably lower crime, yes, but more by intimidation to criminals than by the effectiveness of the citizens carrying all the guns. Accidents would sky rocket. Face it, most people here are morons, you meet them everyday. I do NOT want all american citizens carrying firearms. I love this country, but I dont believe most americans have the discipline or the sense to own and carry firearms. This is not Israel, their citizens understand they live in a freakin' warzone and they have a clear understanding about the importance and discipline involved in owning firearms.
That being said, I've always wanted a "tommygun", and I dont care if the rest of you cant own any guns at all as long as I can have a Thompson and saw pumpkins in half out in the country with 45 slugs

it would go way up
whan people get mad, they attack the people who are making them mad (natural impulse) and when your mad at someone, most people would not hesitate to whip out a gun and shoot them. Not carrying guns saves more lives, than it would if everyone carried. im sure you would rather be robbed, and beat up than rich and in jail for murder. If I see one more "What happened to smart parts" thread, I will kill Adam Gardner. You have been warned.Comment

I've lately given thought to applying for a concealed carry liscence. My job has me in some unsettling parts of town at least 2x a week... Not a pleasant trip.
I've had a guy grab on to my truck at an intersection and refuse let go.
Also, a co-workers friend recently was robbed of his truck and everything in it. These 3 guys stabbed him in the neck and forced him out of his truck at gunpoint, leaving him on the side of the road bleeding. He barely made it to a hospital in time.
If more people responsibly owned firearms, the crime rate would diminish greatly.
