Far superior to shooting him in the head, which is what I would have been compelled to do.

Its doesn't matter what you need to survive. If you live in a society of laws, you must obey them or pay the price.

What's the purpose of shooting the car and then crushing it with a tank?

        You're skirting my questions:

        (1) Should American soldiers be held to a higher standard of morality than Iraqi soldiers?

        (2) In America, would it be fair to crush someone's car because they stole firewood?

        Answer the questions.

Considering all of the media attention and political fallout (bad for Bush) of the recent prisoner abuse scandles, your attitude fits in perfectly at this time.

society of laws? What society? It's currently a war torn country with no confidence that anyone else will obey any priviously established laws. If you're starving and you need wood to cook your meals, then what are you going to do if the only way to get it is to steal it?

Whether they were poor souls trying to survive or bad guys trying to take advantage of the situation, is it right for our troops (who are "acting" as a police force) to be judge, jury, and executioner?

How about just slashing one of their tires, rendering it immobile for the time being? ...Instead of destroying the car the way they did (showing off).

Our troops shouldn't act as a police force? Then who the hell should police them?

As to my little liberal friend's questions,

                  1. No

                  2. Yes, but not legal.

I think my redneck was missing from the box when I bought my automag.

I really don't know how you can't see that was stupid and wrong for the soldiers to do.

Come on, if I had a car that crappy I would pay to see it run over by a tank.

First off - Rooster - Stealing wood is not all the same. Perhaps they were stealing wood in order to make a fire so that they could warm their house...which was demolished by Bush's bombs. It's not like they snuck into an American compound and tried to make off with a rocket launcher. It's freakin' wood.

Secondly, to those who think that this punishment is fair and accurate, I'm scared to see what sort of regime you would impose if you were given the leadership of a country. Just because "other arab countries" do it does NOT make it okay for us to do it. That just thins the line between our morality and the morality of Saddam Hussein. I guess you guys wouldn't mind if US GIs raped Iraqi women because "hey, the Arabs did it."

This video gives us an image of the strong and the weak. The US soldiers obviously have the power here - they have tanks and guns, while these Iraqis are huddled together watching their car be crushed. It's not like these Iraqis had any chance of escaping in their car. What we're shown here is a great example of the fact that the United States DOESN"T ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT IT'S DOING in Iraq. We have soldiers who aren't actually enforcing laws, but are torturing prisoners and running over cars.

Bush's Administration is a bunch of morons who didn't think before entering Iraq. Just like Afghanistan, we're raping a counrty and leaving it to fend for itself. Greed is a powerful thing.
Agreed, couldn't have put it better myself. We go around saying that they are uncivilized and have no morals, yet in Iraq we continuously stoop down to their level and commit many of the same acts. Instead of defending it we should admit that what we are doing there is wrong, and actually fix something for once. We become enraged at Saddam torturing people, and yet even after we rid ourselves of him, there is still torture in Iraq. But we're the ones doing the torturing.

Its easy for us to sit back and judge the actions of some of the soldiers in Iraq. But the fact is that each day they are subjected to events that we cannot begin to imagine. While I do think this was a little over the top (WTF was up with the shooting? That was a bit much) I do not feel qualified to judge their actions.

Yes, that is fine. I don't think that we are qualified. War changes people, it is true. The stress that it can put on the mind and body is great.

Same goes for the other side though.
