I agree with part of that Captian.... I do not KNOW if it hurt anyone. No one knows. And thats the problem. And the real risk he took that was not his to take.

However if he is a good person and a good teacher then he will learn from this and should not be fired. He should appologise for making a judgement he should not have made. And simply be reprimanded is all. Thats my take on it.

A friend of mine has the movie posted on his web site. He himself has seen it, and said his was very disturbed by it. Myself and another one of his friends protested him posting the video on his site, as we frequent his site a lot, and neither of us have ANY wish to see this video. It, quite frankly, is something no one should ever see, it's just horrifying. But, who listens to their friends these days? He posted the video on his web site, and today in class our class was taken to the library. This had to be the WORST trip out of a class room I have ever had... including being chewed out by principles. The movie had to have been played over 100 times in a half hour period. The teacher saw what was going on, and he did nothing about it. He is a very poor teacher, it is his first year and he can't controll the class on a GOOD day. I could care less about that though, the WORST part is that kids in the class crowded around, and sat there and watched it, all the time saying "that is horrible!" or other moronic things like that, as they sat there staring at the screen, as they play it over, and over. I made a remark to another one of my friends who had watched it and he said "It's not that bad, the video is horrible. You can't tell when his head is being cut off." To which I could only reply, "The quality has NOTHING to do with it. It is a live person, having his head CUT OFF. There is something seriously wrong with you".
And I really think there is something wrong with people today, when someone isn't phased by something that graphic at all. I sometimes feel I have a very loose connection with reality, but even I know what is wrong, or when to say "That's enough", and in retrospect, I SHOULD have stood up and stoped them from watching it. Even though I would have been riddiculed and shunned. One thing is for sure, my friend is going to take that video down if it's the last thing I do.

something very similar happened at my school (Folsom High near sacramento)and it was on the local news. some kid hacked around the school's firewall and got onto the sight and watched the video.

there was a bunch of people who saw it and someone told their parents and the parents complained to the school (which is to be expected).

however the variation between the 2 incidents lies in the fact that the teacher was unaware this was taking place in his class. he is currently on temporary suspension and is up for losing his job.

I have personally spoken to students in the particular class period when it took place and they told me the teacher told them how to get around the school's firewall.

i don't know whether he knew that they were getting around the firewall for the purpose of watching the video or not.

students had a petition that they were passing around today in hopes that they could collect enough signatures, from both faculty and students, to let him keep his job.

I do not think this man should be fired if this is his first infraction. However punishment is needed.

When I saw the video, it was in the School Library. No firewall had to be passed to get to the tape (It's setup weird, but that's a topic for another day). I watched it to the point where his neck was partially sawed through, and turned around and returned to my computer. Normally, blood and gore doesn't affect me, I live in Montana after all, but something about the other kids grouped around saying "wow" "that's got to suck" and laughing while they watched didn't feel right. I sat back down, and struck up a conversation with an Junior girl that had been trying to peek over the other kids shoulders. They played the video again and again, all the time laughing about how they had to hack and saw at the poor guy's neck.

The video is creepy, there is no debating that, but all my posts have been that High School is a point of transition about making choices and excersicing (sp?) independance from our parents. I'm not an average teen, and was trying to point out my observances. I think that if this video is viewed, whether parents know or not, it needs to be in a place where the viewers can talk about it and be monitored. A controlled situation is better than an uncontrolled one. Regardless, the parents should be notified whenever such a thing occurs. The problem is that it doesn't always happen.

                    What was he thinking??????

Does he not have a shred of common sense?

I'm lenient. I say reprimanded, transfered, etc. But to be perfectly honest he deserves to be fired. If that is what happens...no one forced him to be such an idiot that day.

I agree entirely. At some point you have to learn not to be an idiot.

Plus you guys automatically draw the conclusion that he doesn't have any children and doesn't know what being a parent is all about, when in fact he does. You guys better get your facts straight before you go and judge this man and jump to the conclusion that some man you've never met or even know his name for that matter should be fired.

Plus, everyone on here seems to tell us teenagers to grow up and get the facts straight, but as soon as something like this happens you classify teenagers as children. Contradiction.
I care what he did, as I am certain a good share of parents do. I don't care if he has children or not.. does not mean this was not stupid. And yes... grow up.. until you do grow up and act mature.. you are children, it took me until I was 22 to grow up. BTW... thats not directed at anyone in particular, just a general point.

One way or another.. if my child was attending this school this man would no longer teach my child, or have anything to do wtih them. I don't care if it was as simple as telling the administration I wanted an alternate teacher, as involved as a restraining order to keep him away from my children (bet it could be gotten), or having to sue the school to get him not to be involved with my child - he would not be teaching my child. This showed a lack of judgement at best.

And please, if you don't know the mans name, don't state that he should get fired, how would you like it if at work you slipped up once but you thought it was ok, then you had people all over the country that you've never heard of saying you should be fired. Please, give the man some dignity.
It is the degree to which he erred that is the bone of contention. As I said before, he needs to be serely punished in a way he does not forget, but I would not fire him. No one has questioned his motives, just his wisdom.

We could extrapolate this situation to see a sex ed teacher showing a porno. After all that teacher is blunt and wants to show you what sex really is.

His lack of judgement is what needs to be punished to set an example for the rest of the teachers there. They need to think before they act!
