That teacher is an idiot. Showing a video of that level to teenagers (who can't even make it into a friggin' R movie without their parents) without parent permission is idiotic. Sure, while none of the kids may be traumatized by it, it was certainly bad enough to shake a kid so much as to inform his parents. The risk of permanent psychological damage is far too great to run around showing this video to kids. And yes, you are kids. Look at your peers you talk about that laugh at the video. They are not mature enough to comprehend that this man had a loving family that cared deeply about him and now everyone in the world is watching him get murdered over and over again, and some people are laughing about it. My heart and prayers go out to them, that's almost too much to deal with. And don't give me this "Whatever, you old man ragging on us punk kids" spiel, I'm only 18.
And yes, Band of Brothers and all that were gorier, but they're actors, not an innocent person (Yes, he was innocent. Anyone who says differently is a traitor and doesn't deserve their 1st amendment rights).
I'm sure most everyone has seen a Holocaust movie. While it may have been disturbing, it isn't near as bad as the real thing. If you ever see REAL footage, it's much more emotional and disgusting simply because you can't say, "Well, those are really just actors and this didn't happen to them."
Just giving the kids the option to view something of that level in a controlled, public learning environment is ridiculous. I'd can him or at least punish him severely. You're too young (hell, I'm too young) to know what's good for you.
