One of my favorites is Pat Conroy. Lords of Discipline and Prince of Tides are just AWESOME books. Vonnegut is really good, I have read a lot of his stuff.

I didn't really get into reading novels until last year when I finished up college. Now I can't stop reading!

Also, Jon Krakauer is really good (Into Thin Air). You HAVE to read his new book about those horrible mormans in Utah, it's called Under the Banner of Heaven.

LMB's Vorkosigan books are excellent. I feel like I grew up with Miles, as his age and mine have nearly matched as each new book has come out, I was 18 when I read the first one, and 34 the mst reacent, same as him. If you like those books, you should also read the author's two books about Cordelia before Miles is born(combined as "Cordelia's Honor"), and the one with Elli Quinn off on a solo mission ("Ethan of Athos"). Sgt. Bothari is my favourite character.

I have read almost all of Laumer's Bolo books, but I can't honestly reccommend them as they are pretty formulaic, and often factually inconsistent as a series. The first story I read, which may be the original, "Combat Unit" should be considered a classic.

"Ender's Game" was an amazing short story, but I could not keep interested in it as a massive novel. Ditto for Asimov's "Nightfall".

More authors I forgot to mention
        - George Orwell. Animal farm & 1984 are two of my favourites.
        - S.M. Stirling, for his "Draka" novels. Chilling alternate world.

SlipknotX556, I feel sad for you if you don't see the point of reading outside of school.

Funny. I remember going to some English class Fresman year in college. I had a book and was reading it before class. The prof was stunned to see a student reading a book outside of class just for the fun of it. He asked, "What are you reading?" I showed him my dog-eared copy of Neuromancer and told him it was my third time reading it

Even if I had set that building on fire that prof would have still given me an A in that class

I'm more of a series reader, but if I had to name some:

Tolkien (Comon, think about my nickname here... )
Dragonlance - Magret Weis & Tracey Hickman
Star Wars - Timothy Zhan, Mike Stackpole, Kevin Anderson

I read ridiculous amounts of books, my room is buried in paperbacks because I buy them all.

                    To list a few:

Steven King (Can't wait for the Dark Tower to end, the last book was awesome), Grisham, Clancy, Heinlein, Ludlum, Stephen Ambrose, Cussler (terrible books, on one hand, but entertaining on the other. Its like steven segal movies, you know they are bad, but you still watch them), Piers Anthony, bunch of others.

I own just about every Stephen King book, I think just about the only one I am missing is Dolores Claiborne.

Right now I'm plowing through Ludlums books, so another month or two and I'll own all his as well.
