at montaulk one day, i saw a guy weigh in a 55 lbs striped bass. soaking wet, i asked him how he caught the fish ( i was referring to bait, and location ect..) he said he was skin diving off the tip of the jetty.

imagine this.... 150 feet of line connected to a fly fishing reel and a speargun, fighting a 55 lb fish and coming up for air ever few minutes

There are a lot of guys on Guam who fish mainly by spear. You dont need a license or permit. When AI used to go out every day I could dive as deep as sixty feet, and be down for about two minutes. But ussually I would only down about 20-30 feet. That is the reef depth. So there is no real reason to go farther unless it is for bragging rights.

As for preference I would go Hawaiian sling before I go gun. With a gun at lower depths you need more straps. But with a sling you just pull it as far back as you want.

Cute gun. What is that a JBL mini carbine? I had one of those. Got a real speargun though. The small JBLs are pretty worthless unless you are spearing fish that dont move like catfish or flounder. This is what I use now.

FOL-ive been looking for laws on it forever. I cant find any. The most I can find is that the same laws are for spear fishing and regular fishing. So if you have a liscence and dont go over your limit, your fine. At least thats what im hearing.

We usually use Hawaiian slings in the ocean which is kind of like bow hunting, more of a challenge. But we were bored today so we hopped in the lake with the new toy.

My best guess to why its deformed is cuz we were pressing on its stomach making it make these farting noises for about 5 minutes of good solid entertainment.

California fish and game code:


5507. It is unlawful for any person to possess, except in his home,
any fish spear or gaff within 300 feet of any lake or stream in this
State, at any time when spearing is prohibited in such lake or
stream. This section does not apply to the possession of a gaff
carried as an accessory while angling.

I don't even live there and it took me all of five minutes to find it.

woa, i must be really bad at looking things up.

well it says nothing about the ocean. We usually stay out of the lakes anyway.

and yes its a JBL mini. I would get a bigger one if A. I had enough money and B. I had trouble spearing fish with a sling or short spear, where we go, which is almost always on a reef off the shore no more and 30 feet deep. Ive been able to spear just about anything around the reef with my sling providing I see it first usually.

Marine spearfishing is legal, just has it's own set of rules a regs to go with it.

It is only illegal in Calli if the lake or stream that you are fishing in SPECIFICALLY prohibits spears. This includes above and below the water. The huge majority of lakes here are not under State Parks or direct F&G control, leaving spears legal for nearly all waterways.

BUT, you still need a fishing license if over 12 (or is it 16?)yrs. old regardless of method of take.

Yea theres alot of that in Oklahoma and parts of Texas. They go in these rivers and pull these channel cats out of there that are huge. Its actually illegal but man they pull out some monsters.

Also, catfish are perfectly edible. They are not anything like carp. Catfish is one of the best fish dishes if u ask me.

Ive never been spearfishing but ive been bowfishing, it was kinda cool but we didnt get anything

i watched on tv with 2 ppl who did that and it was crazy. they set the boxes out in the river and stick there hand in the opening of the box and the catfish bites there hand. they grab it and try to get it in the boat.

i use to do that all the time in the river by my house, up until the day i stuck my hand in a hole that was occupied by a snapping turtle. that was not a good day. luckly it was only stitches and not a digit.
