Don't see the US banning guns of certain calibre do you...and how many schools etc have got shot up in recent times or public places had snipers shooting at will....we had two events like this....Hungerford and then Dunblane..result guns banned.

    .
This is all in fun, remember that

Actually the US has restricted guns for some time - hence why you dont have anything bigger than .50. Ditto that on fully automatic weapons. Since those restrictions (the original) very few crimes have been committed with restricted weapons (I don't have the numbers in front of me but these laws date back to the 30s??) basically none. It has been one of few effective guncontrol measures... compare them to the severe measures in countrys with strong gun laws.

Few crimes have been comminited with weapons greater than .50cal because it is impractical. A while ago I think it was Smith and Wesson made a .50cal revolver and some people were loosing their bowls over it. First off the thing was huge, not easy to conceal. Then how many people are going to buy a $1000 gun and pay $0.25 a bullet to go around shooting people.

i want one. i went to the range to shoot one but its only between certain hours.

its 2$ a shot at the range, and like 24$ for a box of 20 in a regular store. but then again i dont imagine wanting to shoot that many at the range, and if u cant kill an animal with 20 of those shots, huntings not your sport

Lets try some stats for you

                Total crime per capita Link

                Burglaries per capita Link

                Robberies per capita link

                Car thefts per capita Link

                Frauds per capita Link

Now that is interesting it looks much better to live in the UK As long as you dont mind being robbed blind or having your car Stolen or what ever you call it

Australia with their gun ban is right on top. Burglers no longer have to worry about a home owner having a gun

Southpaw I assume by your comment that your total crimes link was mis linked as when I looked at the site I found it as this one http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_tot_cri

On a crime by crime statistic it doesn't look that great in the UK although the overall link makes it look better (link above) But as I said I wasn't saying the UK was great or otherwise. My original post that courted some controvesy (by some) was an observational post not a flag waving exersise. Being a victim of crime is bad wherever you live I have been attacked in a road rage incident and had one of my cars broken into twice but this was several years ago, so far all is good. I would say though that as far as guns are concerned in the UK the only people who have guns are the Police (yes our police are armed just not all the time) and the Armed forces and the hardened criminals (bank robbers and drug dealers)...so if someone in america stopped me and said give me your money I would tend to think about handing it over but in the UK I would like to think I would take the chance and run as I can outrun a knife but not a bullet.

The murders link doesn't look too clever does it? http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur

lohman446 I haven't read the thread about the class for about a week as it was pretty boring...seems like another major threadjack is going on

No, the link is correct. The us will have a ton more numeric totals of all the rated crimes. We have more people that is why you divide by the total number of people in the country (that is what per cap means) If you do this then you can get a better understanding of how all countries compare.

Edit the Us has 290,342,554 people and the Uk has 60,094,648 people. I wonder who will have a numeric disadvantage
