Hey, yeah, i'm a student, I'm so almost done (15 hours) and i'm getting a convertible tablet today. I'd love to check out a g5 dually (if i had money that wasnt constantly being spent on paintball) and do some coding on it. I think it'd improve my portability in my code if i do it all on macs/apples. It's just so nice to use visual studio .net and have a working gui for your windoze apps in under 15 mins! I like the way mac likes to isolate the end user from the menutia(sp?) of all the inner workings. But hey, that's how i make my money! My computers are all custom built (5 i count in my house) and they all run full time. The only problem with my home theater PC is the noise (micro atx power supply is a tad noisy). I used to hate macs, but slowly and surely they are winning me over. If i can use my MX510 blue hologram mouse on a g5 with all the same functionality as i get in windows, i'm sold, the rest i can figure out.

OH, yeah, dont get seduced by the net box marketing. I've done it before and have been sorely in need of money afterwards because, yeah, it's only 500, but then add a monitor (depending on type, up to 2300 bucks!!) and all kinds of other stuff you'd not normally think of. I think the canteloupe macs are the best bet, they come with everything and are at least a little bit upgradeable.

Yeah, logitech has full drivers for OSX that allow for complete control of the buttons on the MX500 and MX310 My wife and I use on our Powerbooks. I'm sure your MX510 will be all good.

"Out of curiousity, can you name a few valid reasons why you despise Apple so much. It seems that you have a vendetta against them, judging from this and previous posts. No offense meant..... "

Because I take offense to a computer builder thinking that I am too stupid to work on my own system. However, Apple has made a ton of money selling to people who are too stupid to work on their own system. My first computer was an apple macintosh (the original). I loved it. I could do anything I needed to do on it. I couldn't break it it. I was also five. That is the user level they are building these things for. I take offense to that.

Interesting. So it can't be that Apple caters to people that don't necessarily want to work on their systems (rather, they just want to do work with their systems). Nor is it even remotely possible that reasonable people might simply prefer OS X to Windows. No, everyone that uses a Mac--nay, anyone that has an opinion that differs from yours--must have the intellectual capacity of a toddler.

Is that an adequate summary of where you stand on this issue?

Funny, many of the Mac fans I know are hardcore unix geeks that are very smart. I guess rooster is simply not familiar with OSX at all. It's a unix OS, with all of the flexiability that comes with that.

Alrite... i AM getting one of these in the next few weeks ( see the thread with me sellin my comp )... Im geetting the 1,4 GHz with 512 Memory, and the DVD-rw Drive, and the key board and mouse about 830 dollars...

But I ran into 2 question... Theres NO Microphone Imput or anything... I have a 5.1 speaker sound system, and the 1 headphone jack would only enable me to use 2 of them... I kno there is some kind of 5.1 Channel sound card that plugs in Via USB... think this would work? So I could use all the channels?

And am I just S.O.L. on the microphone

I'm not knocking the software, its fairly good. I'm knocking the hardware, which is crap. If you can't use off-the-shelf components, why waste your time? The computer is built for five-year-olds and morons who can't handle something without breaking it. If you are too stupid to work on your own system, then by all means, buy a disposable one.

Im in the process of installing a stereo into my 98 grand cherokee. I am going to put one of these mac mini's under the rear bench seat and intigrate it into a touch screen on the dash. My friend is a mac buff and has already written his own media player to work with this touch screen interfavce using OS X. All of my music will be stored on the mac's HD. I will also have it set up so that I can use my ipod as a flash memory device to put on and remove songs while in the car. Eventually when it becomes less expensive for a monthly subscription, I will get one of those Sprint PCS wireless PCMCIA cards and be able to have internet access in the car, even while driving. This is in addition to all the JL audio components I am transfering from my '77 bronco.

Hey, let me know about that interface. I was already ready to build a PC based carputer, up until this thing came out.

But there's a lack of Front ends for the OS X. I really want a customizable Nav system.

Truthfully...A pc based carputer will give you much more flexibility, especially if you want to use the pc as a nav system. personaly I am more interested in the audio side of car electronics. My friend has just finished a book that is now in the editing phase called "geek my ride" It is a whole 400 book on how to install a carputer and all the cool things that can go along with it. anyone intersted when it comes out...I'll keep you all posted.
