Discussing the losses, sacrifices, and where the Nazis actually won also counter balances the "Saving Private Ryan" glorification of the war. As does admittingand recognizing the attrocities suffered by all sides (say the result of fire bombing or nuclear bombs).
Or, perhaps studying the mindset of the Kamakasee fighter lends insight to current religious fanatics.
Or focus on specific technologies used in various battles, the dam busters, the V1/V2s, development of the jet engine....
There's a wealth of information off the beaten path.
