I don't know what colleges yall are going too, but tuition at Yale is around 42k a year on average, so 98k could pay you through most publics colleges easily enough.

Each kid gets $32,666.66 and say they go to a decent public school like U of I. To go there you are paying around $22,402 a year (or $89,608 for all 4 years). So the money those kids found will pay for 1 year of college at U of I and less than half for the next. leaving them with $56,941.34 to come up with to complete their education. No wonder I'm broke

Didn't know we were talking a three way split . I stand corrected, 32k could get you through some schools still, but maybe not one's first choices.

Public college is the way to go unless the degree you want is at a private college. Your parents paid for much of that public college education to begin with by paying their state taxes every year, so you might as well go put it to use. Plus, for undergrad, private college is for the most part a waste of money.

It doesn't matter where you go, it's how much you put into it that ultimately determines how much you get out of it.

The sad thing is, most of that money will probably be wasted away by the time those kids hit 18.

Depending on many different things, public schools can cost nearly as much as private schools. The scholarships you initially get from a private school (if you have scholarship worthy stats) almost evens out the cost, and some public schools are getting expensive (and more selective). In the end, it all depends on if you want to be more of a number or more of a person to the college you choose.

True, I applied for and got accepted to two schools, one private and one public. I got around $2,000 worth of scholarships at the public and about $15,000 at the private. The private still cost more though

Actually, the Sheriff's Dept. paid the kids with three separate checks totalling $98,100.00--so they each get an even amount of $32,700.

I'd say that's a nice start for college no matter where you go!
