I knew the nomination process wasn't too involved, but the fact that someone actually went through the trouble for a murdering tool like that is amazing. Then again, celebrity favorite Mumia Abu-Jamal managed to fool a lot of people, so maybe it isn't too amazing after all.

Where's Judge Dredd when you need him?

Personally, I think the whole "Murder someone and we will kill you" things works just fine, and certainly makes me happier.
Because killing him makes him a martyr.

But we are not discussing a gang that has some holy mission that would value martyrdom. The gangs are driven, as I see it, by greed not by some goal to make things better because a god told them, or because it is right. He only becomes a matyr in the eyes of the anti-capital punishment crowd, who frankly have better martyrs already.

To whom, gang members? Do you really imagine that the death of Tookie is going to make people flock to the bloods or crips? This isn't a religious situation, its pure criminality.

This guy was scum of the Earth, plain and simple. I don't care how many stupid books he wrote, he never, ever, took responsibility for the murders he committed. If he wanted to make positive changes in his life, he really should have done it BEFORE he murdered innocent people.

I think you meant to say:

Because killing him makes him a martizzle.

I don't think gangs know what a martyr is.

I just mean that we have to be careful with what we do. People like him are different than killing the average murderer. I have no opinion on what should have been done with him, really. I have no opinion on whether or not his apparent distaste for gang violence was real or not. I think that any person who can stop-- or help to stop-- gang violence should be kept alive for as long as they're useful. But then again, my feelings are really conflicted in the matter.

If someone is on death row, they really shouldn't be on death row for 20+ years. If a cop had shown up at the scene of the crime in 1979 (I think that's when he committed the crimes) and shot him, there would have been none of this prancing around with, "oh, but he's changed!" But now, 20 years later, he deserves clemency? I think this demonstrates just what's wrong with the death penalty in America. But that's just my personal opinion.

                the title made me LOL.

but seriously, how much would it suck watching that needle of death puncture your skin.

i'd rather get a big zap from the chair.

The problem is that the justice system is still clinging to the concept that jails are supposed to "reform" people, not punish them. Therefore, if Tookie was reformed, the argument goes, why did he have to be executed?

Having witnessed the true "revolving door" nature of jails, I'm firmly in the "punishment" camp. Tookie got what he deserved. Any he shouldn't be entitled to any extra consideration just because he became some sort of celebrity.

honestly I think the capital punishment regulations are to lax. If your cruel enough to to a crime like shooting someone, you should get the same in return. Although I do wish they would have fried him rather then give him a "painless" shot.

We have spent over $1.7M keeping him alive over the years during his death sentence. We could have spent that mony in so many better ways.

Austrians are pissed at Arnold too over the whole thing. I didn't hear them offer to take Tookie and his buddies over there to Austria to live with them though.
