    A theatrical/love dilemma

Here's a question for you thespians on here. Ok, my girlfriend and I have been dating for 2.5 years now, we're seniors in highschool, we plan on marrying out of college, etc. Just some background. The thing is, she's in the play. She has been for a couple years. She really loves being in the musicals, I hate them myself. I'm more of a drama kind of guy.

This year's musical is "Ms. Saigon". It's the first time the play has been done off Broadway. It's a very big deal and she's very excited. She didn't get a lead, but she does play some of the more major background characters with a couple singing solos and whatnot. Most of the parts she plays are hookers and strippers (you'd understand if you knew the play lol). That right there is the main problem. At first I was like, "Wow, that's awesome. Please tell me you get to keep the costumes." Then she started to describe the scenes.

Here's where I get wierded out. Playing a Vietnamese lady of the night, she has to like fool around with guys, American soldiers. Now, I appreciate theatre, I like a bit of acting myself (drama as I said before). But this just makes me uncomfortable. There are scenes where she takes soldiers to her room, seduces them with... dancing, etc. Of course it's all fake and I'm the one who's going to be getting the real thing after the show, but still you just can't help having that nasty feeling. I don't even know if I could even b in the mood after seeing all that.

So, I'm asking any of you who may be actors, friends/significant others of actors, etc to help me out here. How do you cope with that? Any specific ways that you guys/gals deal with it? I'm certainly not going to ask my girlfriend to stop doing this and give something up that she really loves. That's out of the question. I just want to know how I can deal with it myself. I've already spoken to her about it, and i really don't feel any better lol. There's got to be some way to dispel this ridiculous anxiety.

Thanks all, I really appreciate it.

i get what you mean, im in my senior year and in drama. last year we did les miserables. this year it isnt as bad though... beauty and the beast. ha

as for your problem, as long as you understand its just part of the play then it shouldnt get to you. and if it bugs you to watch it, then dont. that way there wont be any image in your head during the after party

Well, at the end of the day, she still goes home with you. plain and simple, imagine if your girl was a stripper, man, that can be wierd .

Don't have any real advice, but do be careful. I have seen a situation like that break up a longtime couple. It was ugly as hell to watch happen. in the end everyone ended up hurt.

This reminds me of that Adam Sandler song where his girlfriend is a hooker...

Hmm, let's see... How do you cope with that... Hmmm..

I'd probably quit being an idiot selfish jerk, if I were you. That should clear up the whole 'situation'.

I did a few plays in highschool...I was in charge of lighting, sound, etc.

The characters who were supposed to be "in love" on stage often ended up boning each other, or the light/sound guy off stage. Sometimes during rehersals they would come visit me in my private secluded audio/lighting booooooooth and have some "fun". Granted this only happened twice, and only one of the girls had a boyfriend at the time...

Based on my experiences...you are allowed to be 15% jealous.

I wouldn't worry about some dudes in a musical stealing your girl.

                  Gimp's got a good point.

Our theater department was particularly sad.

everything I said above was a lie...except for the part about operating the lights and sound.

Unless you have reasons other than the acting to be concerned (ie: somethings happened between the two of them before) I wouldn't worry about it.

I really hope you don't take this the wrong way.

Perhaps if you are getting jelious over what's happening in plain view you should reconsider the "getting married after college" deal. Look at it this way, you are either being silly for no reason, or the relationship is not all that healthy. If you both share a real commitment, her acting a part on stage should not bother you at all. If it's what she wants to do, and it's not being unfaithful to you, what's the issue?

Thank you for everyone who had something intelligent to say. The ignorant statements about reconsidering the relationshiop obviously display people's lack of knowledge about the complexity of this type of situation. Just because I'm uncomfortable with that kind of thing doesn't mean I'm selfish, grow up.

We talked, and smoothed it out. I found out that the scene isn't as bad as I thought. I also found out that the guy she's doing the scene with is gay. I'm gonna meet him and talk with him, just to get comfortable with it. My girlfriend also said she would videotape the scene at rehearsal so I can see it beforehand and I'm not all surprised and everything. Everything's great now. Talking to each other is the best possible thing in a relationship. I'm glad I did. Thanks all.
