Not to start an argument, but how do you consider Blackwater merc? Last I checked (less than a week ago) thet provide training stateside for government agencies, and private security stateside and abroad. A merc is an offensive unit, security is defensive.Die Screaming

Thats an interesting definition. I would say that "security" is just the new, fashionable term for mercenary. Who ever said mercenaries were purely used in offensive roles?Originally posted by EagleNot to start an argument, but how do you consider Blackwater merc? I would advise against joining the legion. It sounds real cool and all, but I'm guessing it would start to suck immediately.Comment

Not necessarily.Originally posted by Eagle... A merc is an offensive unit, security is defensive.
Websters defines a mercenary:
n. 1. One who is hired; a hireling; especially, a soldier hired into foreign service.
The Swiss Guards at the Vatican are mercenaries, and their role is purely defensive. It is more common to use mercenaries for offensive purposes, since you have a better idea of the length of time you will need them than if you had a defensive need.

Simply put:Originally posted by Eaglebut how do you consider Blackwater merc?
They put lead down range for the highest bidder... After all they are one of the largest "Private Military Contractors" [aka PMC's] in the world, and are owned and operated by the company, not the DOD... and to think they only train ppl is wonderfull product of corp-political mindshare.
Silly swiss gaurds and their flamboiant uniforms... I still aint gonna mess with them, or the uber scary vatican knightsOriginally posted by Jeffy-CanConThe Swiss Guards at the Vatican are mercenariesLast edited by edweird; 04-07-2006, 09:53 PM.

I don't consider it "merc" since out of my two contracts, one was Department of Defense and the other Department of Homeland Security. Mercs tends to refer to foreign or private interests. Even though a private company may be the first line client, it is still a government contract and you work side by side with soldiers sometimes, if not daily.
Blackwater is okay, but they consider you as an "Independant Contractor" and not an employee, so you get stuck paying your own self-employment taxes (doubles your medicare and social security payments). That extra 7.5% racks up fast!
