Maybe some of us have been disqualified for US service through our past "disgressions". Maybe some of us dont feel that the bush administration (or any other that may come after) are worth our life. Maybe some of us want to join a miltary force that three of our friends and 2 of thier mothers havent already joined... How many of you are ex-marines who climbed Mt. Mother____er, or know someone who has? How many of you know a kid in the army, navy or air force? Im not knockin on anyone who has the balls to pick up a gun in the name of someone or something else... In fact i have a lot of respect for them. I just want to be different.. Who wants to be a soldier when they could be a legionaire? Go to a bar and tell her you're a soldier.. she'll say yeah, so what? so is my brother... go to that same bar and tell her you were once a legionaire. Boom, you got a story to tell, one that shes never heard before...
Life isn't worth living if you don't end up with a story to tell. Have you lived today?

I also like the bit about not feeling that any US administration is worth fighting for, yet somehow the French government, and French interests, seem to be worth fighting for.Comment

Here dude, I would definately read this book and give it serious thought before you do it. You should come into the situation being as educated about it as possible beforehand, because it could be the best thing you ever did with your life or your worst mistake. From what I understand this is the best book available on it.
Also, because your probably filled with all kinds of idealistic notions about the whole thing, just remember that the training you would be in for has a well deserved reputation for toughness and BRUTALITY. I stress the last because brutality is not a hallmark of US training. Quite simply the Legion is allowed to submit their trainees to a level of brutality in their training that the US military is no longer allowed to, or does not think is productive in training it's soldiers. This helps account for the Legion's problem of desertion... just something to think about. Good luck with your choice

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.
But trust me.... You don't.
I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about. This is how bad info gets passed around. If you don't know about the topic....Don't make yourself sound like you do.
Cuz some AOers will believe anything they read.

Well, you implied that you were disqualified for service due to previous "transgressions." Unless you got your nuts chopped off or something, the only thing that really disqualifies you is a felony conviction.Originally posted by Mescalitowho said anything about a felony?

As for fighting for the frenchies, you specifically said that some people (we'd have to believe you were talking about yourself) didn't think that Bush administration, or any other following administration, was worth risking your life in US military service. If you are willing to join the French foreign legion, and therefore face the possibility of dying while in the service of the legion, logic dictates that you must be willing to die for France, or french causes.
Please, go right ahead and join the legion. Obviously you weren't interested in anyone's opinion but your own. I hope you find the love of your life with the "I'm a legionnaire" pick-up line.Comment

Well SC, if we're wrong, correct us. As for the Blackwater issue, as someone who's worked withthem before, I think Recon by Fire put it best. Beyond that, my thoughts on the issue of the Legion or any other military service of a foriegn nation is that if you aren't planning on immigrating to that country, why would you want to serve that nation with the possible exception of wanting to fight a particular enemy (ie the AVG of WW2).Die Screaming
