It is too a swastika. It was tilted, reversed, and became a symbol of hatred. It didn't change its name.

Whoops, you're right. Same name applies to both. The configurations is different (reversed, etc) but the same name appies to each. My bad.

I love the whole iorn cross thing. Everyone wears T's with them (i.e. West Coast Choppers) but don't realise they too are a symbol of the Nazi party.

The Iron cross was around long before the nazis. It's actually called Saint so-and-so's Cross.

The Iron Cross is an insignia of the German Army used long before the Nazi's took over, and one which is still allowed to this day in modern Germany.

In the years before Nazism took over Germany, it was awarded without regard for nationality or social class to combatants for acts of heroism, bravery or leadership skills. During WWII is the meaning was the same, but the medal was only awarded to regular German soldiers which were only of verifiable aryan decent.

In 1945 the wearing or showing in public of a swastika was banned so soldiers who earned an Iron Cross in WWII were unable to wear them (since the Nazi version also had a teensey swastika on it). Then, in 1957 the West German parliament commissioned new Iron Crosses without the swastikas for the WWII veterans to wear in lieu of their Nazi adorned medals, because the medal was a awarded for heroism and valor on the battlefield, not for political reasons.

Symbols only have the power we give them. A Swastika can only hurt someone if there is hate behind it.

To fear a symbol blindly IMO is nothing but ignorance. Fascism is nothing to toy with, but the act of seeing a symbol once used by Fascists will not cause you to suddenly become one.

                            True.

BUT, and bear with me now, could the youths wearing these not simply be making a tongue-in-cheek reference to the folly of man, visa ve the fallen giant that was the USSR? I mean, untold millions dead, countries toppled, entire generations living in fear, untold billions spent, and in the end, it was all for nothing. In the end, the USSR ended up being no more than so much dust and bad memories.

I've always been of the notion that if people didn't just "put the past behind them", they wouldn't be so quick to make the same stupid mistakes over and over again.

If people simply refuse to learn about fascism because it was a distasteful part of history, or refuse to study the USSR because they don't like commie pinko bastages, you'll miss out on the knowledge gleaned from the folly of others. In this case, the false notion that you can mold the human animal on a basic level. The Soviet's learned the hard way, you can make people do a lot of things with fear, but when the chips are down, they'll be gone before you can say "Dasvidanya".

I'm sure at least some of them fall into that category.

The only people I've seen wearing them are scruffy haired college aged misanthropes who WOULD put that much thought into a TShirt.
