Wow, I've never really thought about this issue before...I tend to call it a marker in front of weary parents of potential players, but I'd hafta say that (mostly out of habit) I call it a gun...maybe I should work on that...

I use both, usually marker infront of newer people. Here is a question though.

Alot of people stress people use marker over gun to give the sport a better image. Why do we have a "DEAD" box implying you have been killed in the game.

if someone is offended by us calling them guns they are not going to like the sport as soon as they see it any way. We should not have to change are vocabulary just because a minority of people would be offended by it. Besides, when did gun become a bad word?

The politically correct term is marker. But its really a paintball gun. A "gun" is a device resembling a firearm or cannon, as in its ability to project something under pressure or at great speed. I personally don't think by calling it a "paintball gun" that you might hurt paintball's image. I think ignorant people who are not willing to learn about paintball hurt its image. For example, no one believes "Nerf guns" are bad and should not be used by children. Reason being almost everyone knows what a nerf gun is. The majority of the general public does not know about paintball so when they hear the word "gun" it naturally makes them uneasy, especially parents.

                          HAHA this cracks me up.

Folks, a rose by any other name... Paintball guns are just that. Yes they were originally used for marking trees then cattle. However even at that time they were marking pistols or marking guns. The purpose changed not the product so now they are paintball guns. Calling them a marker will not change the opinion of anyone with a problem with guns. I should know my aunt is a full blown anti gun commie pinko. she wont even come to my house because there are guns here. Hahaha like the guns locked in my gun safe unloaded are gonna load them selves, crack the safe (from the inside no less) trot down the hall and shoot someone. I have disscussed this with her and she claims that she "just doesn't feel safe with all those guns in the same house". Of course she'd be muck more likely to be injured by a falling sword or axe, but that is another story.

Changing to euphamistic language does not change reality. Who here work like to have a job as an equine excrement removal engineer, i.e. a stall muck. I admire the thought process behind this effort. Growing the sport is great, but you and the sprot would be better served by straightforward honesty about ourequipment and our sport. Just like fencing and tae kwan do are sports based on mock combat so is paintball. all of you efforts and PC language will be blown the first time "little Johnny" plays and talks about being shot and sent to the dead box. Honesty is the best policy. Just like momma told you. Your time is better spent discussing paintballs saftey record and the teamwork and leadership acpects of good paintball play. Than tring to convince ppl that a paintball gun should be reffered to with the same term used to describe a "sharpie".

well that is enough of a rant for today.

This thread is kinda silly but I will hop on the band wagon with my 2 cents. They are guns. You can call them anything that makes you happy but they are guns.

look up the deffintion of gun:

                                gun (n).
A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory.
A cannon with a long barrel and a relatively low angle of fire.
A portable firearm, such as a rifle or revolver.
A device resembling a firearm or cannon, as in its ability to project something, such as grease, under pressure or at great speed.
A device that shoots a projectile
A discharge of a firearm or cannon as a signal or salute.
One, such as a hunter, who carries or uses a gun.

A person skilled in the use of a gun.
A professional killer: a hired gun.
The throttle of an engine, as of an automobile.

notice the 1st,4th, and 5th one, granted a paintball gun is not a weapon fro the 1st one, but in the 5th deffinition, that's a paintball gun in a a nut shell....a device that shoots a projectile, and well no matter what all paintball guns resemble a firearm in some way or another, so it fits for #4 as well.

so guys, a marker may be the politically correct term for it...but by definition, they're all guns, sorry marker people
