EMAG & X MAG OWNERS LOOK HERE

OK, I am just trying to just trying to get a feel for a need here. What I am looking for is opinions on something that I am thinking about offering to Emag and Xmag owners. I am in the process of doing a little custom work on an Xmag that I have, and one of the things that I have done is made a custom wood grip for it. I made it out of Kingwood, looks kinda like walnut, but a different grain. I got to thinking, there are very few options for grip panels for the E and X mag. There are the Carbon grips, the aluminum grips, and the plastic grips. All fine grips, and each has a place. But, to me, there is nothing that just looks as good as a fine piece of wood. Each set would be completly unique. And, there are some pretty exotic woods out there, some with incredible grains that just are stunning. Some are colored, like snow white, purple, red, just to name a few. I am at work right now and dont have access to pics, but will post up pics later tonight to give you an idea of what I am talking about. The pics will show a raw, unfinished set, my first attempt. But, with the proper tools, I can make it better. And they can be sealed to be water proof.

I also know how these things work, lots of guys say that they want something and never come thru. But this is really to see if there is any interest in doing this at all. I can get set up fairly cheaply. Also, I can do it two ways. I can buy the wood, make them, and then sell them. Or, you can buy the wood that you like, send it to me and then I make them with your wood. If you elect to buy your own wood, then, I can tell you what limitations there are and what size that you need to buy.

Just give me your thoughts.....Pros and Cons.

This first pic is of a mostly finished set. I have some sanding to do to finish it out. The smudge on the left side scale is, a low place in the wood. The different grains in the wood make sanding smooth a high drama thing. Some areas are softer than others. Also, notice that the display opening is kinda rough. The mistake that I made with this is I waited until I had the panel cut and shaped before I cut out the display opening. I know now that I must cut the opening before I finish out the curve of the grip panel.

This next image shows the display opening a bit better. This was the first one, so the mistakes are being made on this one.

Also, this is Kingwood. There is no stain or sealant on this. Sanded and sealed, it will look just a little different. I plan on putting a Satin finish on this, just to keep the glare down. Also, the actual wood is darker than shown in the pics. I am not a photographer, so the lighting was wrong. Anyway, you guys get the idea.

OK, I went to Ebay and brought up the above search. What it is is a current list under Crafts/woodworking/scales. This search lists the wood that is cut to make knife handles and gun grips. There are several Ebay Stores that specialize in exotic woods and most offer gun and knife scales. To get a feel for what is availible, just look at what they have listed. Any scale that is 1/4 to 1/2 thick, min 2 inches wide and 5 1/4 long will make a grip panel. They are usually sold in pairs.

I have an Emag and a 90 degree frame. If you make wood grips for frames I am sure people will buy. Not much 90 degree options to choose from.

Well, I dont know. I used to have a logic framed mag. Sold it a while back. I dont see why I couldnt make one. I would have to get a coupla grip panels and see what I can do. Right now, I am seeing if there is enough interest for me to go further with this or not. So, I'm saying that I can make them, but just not yet. And, to be honest, there would be a greater selection of wood to choose from, cuz I think that some of the knife scales would be big enough to do a set. But, I dont know that for sure right now. Dont have the measurements yet.

i would like a set for a regular ptp micromag, i think there 45 grip panels. i wouls like them in zebra with a cherry finish or purple heart wood. that would be cool. good luck with this. another i dea would be for peple to pay you and tell you what wood they want and when there finished you send them or just make 3 or 4 sets and see how they sell. just a thaught and good luck again.

I thought about this before I posted this thread. If I do go ahead and do this, then I would make several sets, in different woods, just so people could see what they look like. But the problem comes when someone wants a specific look for a specific marker. It would be hard for me to judge what look you are trying to get for your marker. There are so many different patterns and colors out there that it might be best if I made it so that if a person wanted a specific look, then I would charge a flat rate and you provide the wood. Just to clue you in on this, I was watching a set of Burl wood scales, and they ended up going for about 40 bucks shipped. Granted, this is the Extreme end of things, but you kinda get my point. The wood end is the unknown part of the cost. I can get wood cheaper if I buy in larger quantities, but not the exotic stuff. Also, the more exotic the wood, the greater the overall cost to the buyer.
