I am going to price my grips both ways. First, I will make some from my wood at one price, then, I will also price a set and you supply the wood.

I have been looking at Koa wood. I have never worked any, so I cant say how it would work out. But, I can always try. Very pretty wood. We may be able to work something out.

For those that want to supply their own wood, the wood must be 5 1/4 in long, 2 in. wide, and a min. of 3/8 in thick. 1/2 will work, but the 3/8 works better.

Also, I am trying to decide if I want to stain or seal the wood. I may make it an option for me to finish it or not. That way, you can stain or seal it the way you want.
WOW, sigs. Havent seen these in a while here on AO.

        try it

would 1/4 inch be too thin? what about if it was heavily laquered?

I thought it might work, but doesnt the noid stick out a bit... its been almost 3 months since I have seen my X-mag, so I cant remember...

1/4 in. would only work IF you didnt want any shaping on the wood. If you just wanted just a flat grip panel, then I think that 1/4 in would work. If you wanted a contoured shape to the panel, then it must be thicker. It would actually be easier for me to make if I were only looking to make flat panels.

Example: If you want a grip that looks like this, [ 1/4 should work.

If you want a grip that looks like this, ( 3/8 is what I need to work with

A 1/4 inch grip would be a lot simpler to make, and could be offered at a lower price, less work involved. I tell you what, let me get some 1/4 in stock and make a coulple and we will see how things go. Good idea, havent really thought of the flat panel before this post.

            emag grips

Makes more sense on the e-mag frames, they are already large enough, and dont need to be a whole lot wider. I think with a good laquer or resin finish they should still be able to get some rounded edges and be perfectly fine as long as they are made of hard woods, or even pieces of laminate if you want to make it real easy

hehe jigsaw, router bit for laminates, and a pattern and you could just rip them out!!!

Personally, I dont hold the marker with my right hand, (I am right handed) I hold it with my left hand at the reg. Allows me to get better walks on the trigger. So, grip panel size is not a big issue with me. But I do have largish hands and like a bigger grip, but that is just me. And I would round out the corners and smooth them down. So, there would be no square corners. There would just be no contour to the grip on a 1/4 in. panel. Just flat.

                1/4 board

I think 1/4 inch would allow enough for a light countour - enough to get a curve to the edges is all you really need.

I think about 90% of players do not really hold their grip frame on their gun

But ya at least want it to look nice

                  what the heck...

You have inspired me, I tracked down some planks of Bloodwood and I am going to try and make some grips for my guns.

If you get some interest from people and need some "hobby" style wood, I may have a wood blank supplier for you that seems pretty cool.

                  Any experience doing palm swells?

This is Ambrosia Maple. They are not perfect, but I am almost there. If you notice, the lower right panel screw recess is a bit off. But I know what I did and it wont happen again.

a coupla new wood samples for your veiwing pleasure:

This first one is called Morando wood

And, this one is called Red Mallee Burl. This one will be awesome when I do it. Gonna wait till I get things just right before I tackle this one Looks kinda like a Blood clot to me

All with bench top tools, no money or room for a mill. If I had a mill, I would be doing much more exciting things with it than wood grips

                        Oh, and thanks Styg.

I will say that I am not going to start selling these until I can be sure that they are going to fit and are finished properly. I dont want people postin' how much they think that my grips "suck".

I was just playing around with some wood that I got in. This is called Heartwood. This is one of the Stock woods that I will be offering. The wood is VERY RED. I have put a coat of Black Walnut stain on them. As you can tell, this in NOT a working set, but just me trying out the wood just to see what it will look like. I rounded off the corners too much for the mounting holes to be used.

This is a piece of Heartwood. Raw and un-stained. It looks orange, but is in fact red. I am no photographer, and it shows.

im definitely going to try this myself.ive got an old pair of smart parts wood grips that im gonna work on first(repair pitting, change color and refinish)but i tink i ight be able to make some for myslef.i dont have enough time to make a bunch to sell and that is hwere you come in.it looks like quality and i know that anything made by hand is worth alot more than machined.so i think you can get around $30-$45 for a set of grips.

Good luck Olinar. Hope they come out like you want them too. Just go slow, and be careful cuz once you cut or drill, there is no going back. Also, when you think that you have sanded them enough, sand some more. Finish them out with 220 grit, that gets them smooth.
