Yes. You are correct. We use a person's middle name to distinguish who they are. It is not there for just looks.

It is used when needed for clarity or style, dropped when not. That's why you didn't know Hillary's middle name was Diane but everyone knows Dubya's middle initial is W. Yes some people do use it for looks.

You and I dont go around stating our name as "Robert John Smith". More than likely you would state "Hi I am bob smith".

how funny, i'm takin a course with an astrophysicist at CU boulder and from everything i've learned there, the earth is warming.

India for one has had more rain than ever before, but surrounding areas are wrought with severe drought. Just the same, other areas u see an increase in rainfall/snow, there's a nearby area that's losing that water.

As for this notion that the sun's cooling has a greater effect, im pretty sure that's bogus. Yes the sun will cool, but not in our lifetime, and not rapidly enough for the change to be noticed in the past century.

Gore's movie "An inconvenient truth" goes about all of this with pretty hard evidence and imo is actually pretty interesting. And i've learned that not every published article can be trusted, especially when in "popular" media though i dunno how reputable the site u got that from is.

Global warming is a misnomer in some respects. For instance, if/when the polar ice caps melt, possibly stopping the Gulf Stream thermohaline circulation (look it up), it could cause global cooling in some parts of the world. Unfortunately, this would come at the cost of massive instability of temperature and climate in general.

Read the news. There will always be two sides to any argument (inherently). Read both sides and choose which one makes sense. That's all I can ask.

Also, all the "lieberal" comments are quite annoying. I know this won't stop them, but I would appreciate if we could more often discuss our beliefs without resorting to attacking the other group's political choices. This goes for the comment made about "voting for Obama with all the rest of them" as well, as if voting for Obama was like jumping on the bandwagon.

I'm sure everyone has their biases, but i believe i at least try to hear what each side has to say without my own bias.
As for my teacher, well, he knows a lot more about planets and their atmosphere's than i do, the class is an upper division astronomy course on planets and their atmospheres.

But the best thing anyone can do is to do their own research on this stuff, learn what exactly the "greenhouse" effect is, find statistics on co2 levels (there are other gases that contribute but co2's the big player) across the century and compare those to stats on temperature and weather.
