Just my experience.....
I heard about the news first thing this morning (EST) as I was getting out of my car and into the office...
My sister-in-law works across the street from the WTC and she heard the first crash when she was getting out of WTC from the train. Then as they were evacuating the building, she saw the second plane hit the other tower. From where she was standing, she saw 3 people jumping from the top of the tower to certainly their deaths. (God bless them and their families.) She started to walk uptown (north) to where my wife works.
My wife was downstairs buying breakfast when a stampede of people ran down the street screaming, "Oh my God!!" Thank god she was near the entrance of her office else she could've been crushed or trampled.
In the meantime, almost all communications into the city was flooded and I couldn't contact either my wife nor her sister. Luckily, my wife's company had the common sense to "lock down" the building - no one other than employees were allowed into the building other than the lobby, and both were relatively safe inside. Eventually, they called me - at this point, I was home already and picked up our kids from school. They had to wait for train service to be restored before they can get home. All land transportation (tunnels and bridges)into Manhattan were closed, unless you were emergency personnel. Anyway, both of them made it home tonight. Thank God. My prayers go out to those who did not.
P.S. A close friend of ours works on the 98th floor of 2 WTC. She was on maternity leave and home. However, her company which consisted of 100+ coworkers, all are expected to be dead. This is the tower where the second plane hit....
Again just my experience.....
