thank you peanut for mentioning the tragity on this thread it was getting a little off topic but anyways. this morning at about 3 i was watching the news and saw how all of the other countries were affected by the tragety. LOts of people were very sad and crying, it was very moving. In many countries there are places to place flowers to pay tribute. The most mving think i saw was russia (i dont remember what city maybe moscow) they were actually flying a US flag at half mast and there were a ton of flowers and things bellow. IN the US I tihnk we are very sad, angry and patriotic. From what i saw on the news this may be the act that unites the world (even the countries who used to oppose us) against evil and terrorism. WE will be much more unified as a country after this and maybe so will the world.

What I did for the relief effort

Hey guys and gals. It's been a while since I've posted. I've been looking in from time to time but in all honesty I've been to numb to say anything.

For those who don't know I live in Queens, Ny and work in Midtown Manhattan. A long distance from WTC so I was never in any real harm.

I had planned on giving blood but twas turned away and I wanted to donate money but that felt too cold and distant for someone who lived in the area.

So, what I did was, I took all the money I had saved up for my second emag. 800 dollars. With it I bought 240 pairs of underwear, 30 bars of deodorant and 90 tubes of toothpaste last night. This morning, when I woke up I heard that thye needed other things, among them hard hats and carabiners. Every store I caled in my area was out of hardhats but the Eastern Mountain Sports nearby had about 20 of the really good locking, titanium carabiners so I asked them to set the aside and picked those up.

I then drove through Manhattan to New Jersey and finally found a site to offload my donation and then drove to the command post at 70 Exchange Place to drop off the carabiners.

It was such a sight. This was the first time I had seen the devestation with my own eyes. All my other views of it came to me from CNN or other news sources. Union Turnpike, a street near my house, which runs East/West apparently faces directly towards the towers on one section because since Tuesday, every time I drive down it I can see where the smoke cloud is.

It was such a shock to not see those towers there. I knew I was looking at the same place they should of been but when I didn't see them I scanned up and down the skyline looking for them.

They just weren't there anymore. In there place was a pile of rubble clearly visable from across the river. The area I was in was also where all the Fire, Police and EMS personnell were staging from as well as all the union construction workers. They are only accepting union guys because they have papers saying what they can do.

This was also an area for supplies drop off. There were tow lines of volunteers that stretched about one and a hald city bolcks that were passing gallon water bottles down the line to be packed and shipped to relief workers and others who needed it.

What really blew me away was that every time a boat from Manhattan came back and offloaded some workers everyone on that esplanade stopped what they were doing and the entire crownd exploded in cheers and applause.

Some of the guys coming off the boat waved and smiled but most were shaken so bad it was plainly visible on their faces. It was hopelessness. I can only imagine what they are seeing there and hope I do not have to see something like that myself.

After a few boats came by my brother and I ended up helping some Chicago PD guys move some of their stuff. Then we heard a call for volunteers to go, by train, to the Macys area. They needed help.

My brother and hopped on the next train and from about 2pm today till about 7, when the police stopped us, we sorted donations that ranged from flashlights and crowbars and hard hats to dog food and clothes and snacks and everything else.

These items were sorted into piles, then boxed, loaded onto palettes and then loaded into trailers and onto flatbeds for transportation to the warehouse.

There were blacks, whites, latinos, indians and asians. There were old men and young girls. Goths and preppies were working alongside each other for a common goal.

I'm 28 years old and never in my life have I ever seen such a wonderful sight. For those five hours that I was there those 100+ people were my family. There was a guy who drove all night from Ohio who had no place to stay. He was more concerned with getting the job done that he hadn't even gotten a hotel yet. I offered him my couch but he declined.

There is such an overflow of emotions within my that I can hardly contain it. Sorrow for the lives lost. Hatred for those who did this and those within our own borders who enjoyed it.

But above all is a tremendous pride.

A pride to know that while we as a family may have our arguments and seperations, when the feces hits the air motivator we stop everything and support one another.

A pride in knowing that we will overcome, we will rebuild and we will triumph over those who would see us stumble and fall.

A pride of being an American.

I love this country for nothing more then the opportunity she gives us. The opportunity to give in to our darkest desires or to rise to the steepest challenge.

Today, I saw countless men and women rise to that challenge and with thei support and the support of thousands and millions of others we will go on.

God bless American. Every single one of us.

            World support

I came across this link at HK-Pro And the pictures I saw moved me deeply. http://members.home.com/chucklez/wtc/index.html

I hope it may be of some comfort, and that it will not be short lived support as our military takes action.

              Megadeth,

Thanks for posting that. Being in the Navy, It is good to see that the free world is behind us in what we are probably going to be ordered to do soon.

I know I personally am awaiting the day when we will see justice served.

Thanks Joker. Even if you cant donate blod, time or money there is one thing you can do. Ask you local schools to have all the students write cards and letters of thanks to the relief workers. The relief workers consist of Fire, Police, EMS and construction workers from around the country.

Like I said, I met some cops of Chicago and some union boys rom Ohio yesterday. It was awesome.

Check with www.ny.cares.org on locations where you can send them.

I just wanted to post up again after reading Hastey8's post. My work just had me drive out here from Chicago for work. Driving across the George Washington Bridge heading to Long Island and seeing the hole in the skyline was just a numbing realization. I decided that today I needed to do something, I called around and most blood banks are saying they are full, so I decided to go buy water and make a donation in a drop box at my hotel. Next I got on my work e-mail and found that my company is matching dollar for dollar donations up to 100,000 dollars. I went ahead and donated another 100 dollars to add to the 75 I had donated last week. Friday is payday again and I should be picking up more food/water to help the brave people working in NYC.

                      Darren

PS I hope to donate blood next week if they are accepting it.

I found this incident really tragic. In one way I found it to be good. Well in a way that it reminds us as Americans that stuff like this can happen anywhere. I feel bad for the families and friends that have lost loved ones. As an american I would be proud to fight a war against terrorism. Even though war is not always good. One thing I ask everyone. Treat any Middle Eastern person that is a U.S citizen like you would want to be treated. After all they can't be blamed for what happened unless they were involved. So who are we to judge them. I consider them like I would anyone else that is a citizen of this country. Like any other american no matter what their nationality might be. With all this said I will end this. God Bless America and it's people no matter what their nationality is.

I know that this is off topic for this thread but in regards to the Shartley/peanut discussion on pirated software.

I can fully understand Shartley POV as well as peanuts. I am ashemd to admit it but I had to use pirated software just because the price to purchase was so dang high.

I am referring to Adobe's Preimere video editing software. I used FCP back when I was with MTV but I had a Mac there and a PC at home and as Shartley said, Adobe is THE standard. I'll go a little further and say that they are the standard for PC software.

Anyway, in order to make some spare cash I film family events and whatnot for lower income families in my area. Bronx and Jersey and what not. I directly cater to the Puerto Rican/Mexican and other immigrant sectors because they usually cannot afford the 4 figure price tag that comes along with a real film crew. I usually charge a few hundred buck for two cameras, editing and a couple final copies on VHS tape.

I will admit though, Shartley, that as soon as I could afford it I went out and got my own copy of the software and totally cleaned my HD of the pirated version.
