And with that being said .... In before the close of the thread :)

I for one will also vent my feelings real quick. It was this that kept me off the police force. High scores in the written test, blew away the physical without breathing hard, and a damn fine interview (verbal portion) from what I was told ...

A couple weeks later go to talk to the office in the human resource area and was told that the waiting list for white males was almost a year. Decided that I wasnt going to wait and moved on to another career.

As for Affirmative Action, I can swallow it and agree with it in places where in the RECENT past discrimination needs to be righted.

When it becomes a matter of public policy or expected, then I have problems with it. Also, when it has outlived it's time frame, it has to go. Institutionalizing it is wrong. Fixing a problem isn't.

Affirmative action is a bad thing. Period.

You should NEVER be able to get a job based on ANYTHING buy skills and abilities. If one person is more qualified, it is horrid that they should not get the job, based on race alone.

I remember last year in high school, sitting in my English class, overhearing a conversation between the two kids sitting in front of me, a black guy and a black girl (who we'll just call Bill and Jill). They were talking about their plans for college. To my surprise, Bill seemed to be planning on attending a UC, straight out of High School (so did Jill, but this was not surprising). Bill isn't an idiot, but his SAT score and grades would have you believe otherwise. His SAT total score was lower than my math score (which was lower than my English score). I might be off by a little, but the number I remember was 700. He usually got C's or D's in the classes that he passed.

And yet, despite that, he was confident that he would be accepted to a UC straight out of High School. Why? Well, on the one hand, he did have a rather enormous list of extracurricular activities. He was the ASB president, he was in clubs, he was the head of our "school spirit" organization. And on top of that, he was black! How could they refuse him?

Out of just that little conversation, I can draw more arguments against affirmative action than you can shake a stick at.

First off, I'd like to point out that I would be shocked beyond all comprehension if he actually did get into a UC. But that just gives me another point to argue:
Bill was capable of getting much better grades than he did. He spent all of his time on extracurricular stuff instead of trying to get good grades. Would he have still done this if affirmative action laws had not been in place? You can bet that if he had, he would have at least planned on something other than a UC out of high school. Affirmative action gives minorities the illusion of an all-encompassing safety net, when what they actually have is nothing even close to that.

It never seems to occur to anyone that affirmative action might be contributing to the discrepancy between white peoples' test scores and those of some minorities. I don't claim that it's the only thing, but if you know that you don't have to do as well as everybody else, it's going to affect your performance. I once heard "Bill" arguing in favor of affirmative action, and one argument that he used was that black people were not capable of getting the same test scores as whites. He is definitely not someone who is ashamed to be black, so how do you explain this apparent defeatism?

What if he had gotten into the UC? Does anyone think he would have survived? He had trouble with the easiest classes in High School! He would have had to totally give up all of the extracurricular activities that meant so much to him, only to devote all of his time to finding out the hard way that he couldn't hack it no matter how hard he tried.

You don't even have to bring up the obvious racism against whites. After all, nobody's supposed to care about that. Affirmative action is bad enough for the people it's supposed to be helping.

Want to get rid of AA, fund schools evenly. Take away the states control of the schools and make it a federal governments control. That way all students have an equal chance at receiving an equal education and an equal chance at making in the world.

As it is now, only the white upper middle to upper class has the chance at making into a good school, getting a good job, etc...

Fund inner city schools as much as you fund the suburban schools, fund rural schools as much as you fund suburban schools, and you will take away the need for AA.

The only thing I don't like about AA is its reliance on color (which normally goes hand in hand with location and school funding), but you have others that slip threw the hole. I am more for a benefit to those who come from the lesser funded areas.

Bob and Joe are equally smart kids, with equal amount of drive. Bob goes to a suburban prominently white school, Joe goes to an inner city or rural school. Bob will more then likely do better on the SAT, get into a good college, get a good job, make more money, etc... for his school can afford practice classes, his classes are better, etc... Joe who has to accept the minimal education he receives will do worst, and get into a sub standard college, get a sub standard job, and make less money. And the cycle goes on and on. There is no upward mobility that this country is said to represent. The rich get richer the poor get poorer.

How did I know that you X would have said the Fox shows both sides.
