    Mrs. Hartley,
In my last post, I mentioned that, in my experience, most kids that are home schooled are done so because they had "problems" in public school. Sam's original post mentioned that this is exactly why your daughter is now homeschooled as well. I feel like society has become so numb to this that they simply paint laziness with new labels. Call it ADD, boredom or non-interest, none of those are excuses for failing public school. In my opinion, anyone (not you or your family specifically) that uses this as an excuse for why their child is failing school and needs to be home schooled is fooling themselves.

Some might read my story and say "Oh well, that's a unique circumstance and you can't possibly compare it other homeschool stories." But to me, ALL home school stories are a unique circumstance. The Dept of Education states that there are approx 850,000 homeschoolers , or a little over 1% of all students in the US. That's an incredibly small percent. And when you take away those that are home schooled for religeous/moral reasons, the majority of whats left is problem students or problem schools.

Why did you choose a private school to get your material? Do you have some deeper underlying issues with your particular public school? So if home schooling was so much better for your children, as it obviously was from this statement, and they loved it so much, why did you stop? If it worked part of the time, why not all the time?

He's obviously more than welcome to post anything he wants on here. It was just funny because he's sort of infamous on AO for his soap-box stances

I will apologize to you too for offending you. Once again, it was not my intention to single your family out, it was a generalization about homeschooling, in particular to "fix" a problem child, which I will always be against.

Not good, my mom still has my first grade report card with crappy grades because she thinks it's hilarious. Was I lazy? No I was bored. I got to sit through a bunch of first graders trying to learn the finer points of reading when I was reading civil war books in kindergarden. There is a distinct difference between laziness and boredom. I also was on many club swim teams and soccer teams.
I was also advanced for my grade throughout school and quite bored most of the time watching the kids around me struggle with concepts that seemed mind-numbingly simple to me. But you know what? I just learned what the teacher wanted me to learn, breezed though homework assignments, aced my tests, then pulled out a book and read while the rest of the class finished up. I didn't fail school because I wasn't challanged. That's rediculous to me. I got a great education, made great grades and did fairly well on the ACT (32), all while being extremely bored through most of school, even the AP classes.

You prove my point. Like me, you were bored with school. Disinterested. You were even labeled a "problem child" because your ability to absorb the material in less than the alloted amount of time caused you to be bored and fall asleep. But the big difference is, you didn't fail out of school. You aced it, then you looked elsewhere for a bigger challange to fight the boredom. Now THAT is a solution! I applaude you for that. You didn't use that boredom or "lack of interest" as an excuse to become lazy and fail your classes. That is exactly the difference I'm referring to.

I wish I hadn't mentioned that because I agree. The amount of money you make has no bearing on your intelligence or the life you lead. I'm just sick and tired of this new generation of kids that seem to be born underacheivers. There's absolutely no reason you can't go to Barnes And Noble, pick up a book, learn a trade and make yourself a better person in life. To me, a six figure income is no more of a goal than $13/hour. I have a built-in desire to be smarter and better tomorrow than I am today. If that earns me more money, great. If not, then I'm still smarter than I was yesterday...

I wouldn't have failed because I wasn't challenged, but I wouldn't have learned as much. Instead of reading 2nd grade material in public schools I got to dissect sharks. Instead of listening to some teacher lecture about the Civil War I got to actually visit the battlefields as well. What's the point of "breezing" through school?

Actually I snored in class. Teacher didn't like that. I became so bored that it drove me nuts, but that is because I am a very active person. I didn't seek out the challenge of AP classes, My folks and guidence counsletr decided on them for me!

My parents being very aggressive with my education kept me from getting further into trouble. I also went to a private Catholic high school. I don't know if the public schools would have looked for other solutions for me or just labeled me and moved on.

Wow, everybody here is so much smarter than me.

What's "smart"? It can be many different things, drugs for example, will make one smarter in a sense.

The most important thing is experience, unless you're looking to make money in life. All you need then is the right connections and to kiss some ***.

Oh please! Every generation feels that way about the previous generation. We look at the next generation and can't believe how incompetent they are. Of course we couldn't afford to be incompetent (we were the opposite of incompetent or outcompetent) since we had to walk uphill both ways to school in the snow.

Current generation is just as smart, gifted, and driven as any before. As a matter of fact some have argued on this board that previous generations were all mindless drones that were slaves to cold war politics and thinking. So if you take that view this new generation is the first one that is looking at the world with clear eyes and will save us from our ignorance (note sarcasm)
