Being forced to go into the military/do community service would be idiotic. I, for one, am a lazy ***, and I would not do anything even if I had to. Why force people, it will cause even more problems, and it may even ruin some people's careers. I don't want to waste a year or two of my life doing something I hate.

if you are currently enrolled in school im pretty sure you can be draftedComment

The whole community service idea makes this idea nothing more than a national work program. That doesn't make sense on many levels. First, we are still dealing with the ill effects of the new deal, the last national work program. If you want manditory military service to train a national defense force, or create a pool of able-bodied men for future conflicts, I am all for the idea in principle. But everyone would do military time, and it doesn't matter what your beleifs are about fighting. If you don't want to shoot someone, you can be a medic.

Alright, so let's put ALL of the nation's future innovators, inventors, leaders, and researchers in potential danger. The only people that should be in the military should WANT to be there.Originally posted by Rooster

That's why it was mentoned that you would have a choice to either serve in the military or do community service. For all of the people that couldn't or didn't want to go into military service.Originally posted by Zumina

It's a lifestyle choice, don't discriminate, skinny!
Forced community service/military service is dumb. This is a capitalist society, I thought you republican types would want the people fresh out of college to be toiling under their corporate masters ASAP, and not concerned about training for war when we've already got the biggest army on earth or trying to avoid the cops because they didn't feel like doing their community service. We've already got overflowing jails as it is.

Potential danger? The only thing that is dangerous is not knowing how to deal with danger. Your argument holds absolutely no merit. A person is far more likely to die from a car crash than to die in the service. Should all children be kept out of cars becuase one might be the next Einstein?
The fact that you are afraid of being in the military has tainted your argument.

You are really comparing apples to oranges. Considering how many more millions and millions of people drive a car than serve in the military. Now if you were comparing percentages thats different, but I doubt that you were. It's the same thing as saying paintball is safer than playing golf. Golf has more injuries than paintball per year, but lots more people play golf than paintball. So you really can't compare the two in that manner.Originally posted by Rooster

I think Rooster is dead on with that analogy. How many service people die in the line of duty or in training accidents? Very few! That is why it makes the news each time it happens. How many thousands die in accidents each year on our roads? Does every one of those make the national news?
