    Exhuming McCarthy: Take Two

I've started to notice that you get labled as a liberal no matter how much or how little you oppose republicans.

If you oppose the war in Iraq, you're a liberal.
If you oppose the Bush tax cuts, you're a liberal.
If you oppose Bush himself, you're a liberal.
If you've shown the Nick Berg to anybody other than yourself, you're a liberal.
If you argue about the unemployment rate, you're a liberal.
If you've seen Bowling for Columbine and you liked it, you're a liberal.
If you want to see Farenheit 911, you're a liberal.
If a teacher makes the class read an anti-war poem, they're a liberal.
    If you like Anti-Flag, you're a liberal.
If you think big corporations are gaining too much power, you're a liberal.
If you think Clinton was one of the best presidents in a long time, you're a liberal.
If you think the votes in Florida should have been re-recounted, you're a liberal.
If you think we jumped the gun when we went to war with Iraq, you're a liberal.
If you think that religion shouldn't be in schools, you're a liberal.

Nowdays, even if you are a right-wing republican and disagree with just one little thing about the Bush administration or the war with Iraq, you are automatically labeled as a liberal and your opinions dismissed as crazy liberal talk. Pretty soon it will mount to McCarthy like proportions, and I fear the day it does.

But don't listen to me, I'm just a crazy little liberal with nothing more coming out of my mouth that incomprehensible ranting.

If you whine constantly, you are a liberal.
If you are a tool, you are a liberal.

Jack I consider myself a liberal in most respects, but you still annoy me, so stop complaining about being labeled and argue the facts.

If you oppose the war in Iraq, you're a liberal.
Not really, but if you oppose it with the theory of lets be peaceful and we don't ever need war for any reason your nuts. I think, having remembered Reagon, that a lot of conservatives are questioning if a cold war against terrorisim might have been more effective, not to debate the issue. You can oppose the war, but those that say there was no reason / conspiracy whatever are just nuts.
If you oppose the Bush tax cuts, you're a liberal. Depends which ones there were a lot of them.
If you oppose Bush himself, you're a liberal. Opposing a person or there ideas. If you can't see his point of view, and disagree with more than saying "I'm ashamed to be from the same state as GW" then you need to move - prefereablly to France or Iraq.

If you've shown the Nick Berg to anybody other than yourself, you're a liberal. Nope... if you show this and say "this is what war gets us" and do not think that others do not know there is a cost to war your a nut. If you show this to a group of teenagers without parental consent when your in a position of authority your just stupid.

If you argue about the unemployment rate, you're a liberal. Statistics lie, arguing about statistics is annoying.

If you've seen Bowling for Columbine and you liked it, you're a liberal. If you have seen bowling for Columbine and do not recognize the deceit in its making you are nuts - if you liked it as fiction your just odd.
If you want to see Farenheit 911, you're a liberal. Maybe - no clue on this one.

If a teacher makes the class read an anti-war poem, they're a liberal. If the teacher forces a student to take a political view without first examining it and deciding the truth for themselves they should find a new place to teach, like China.\
If you like Anti-Flag, you're a liberal. I am assuming this is a band and not the movement, cause I don't see this being an argument. And umm.. no clue.

If you think big corporations are gaining too much power, you're a liberal. Nope, your a Libertarian (sp).

If you think Clinton was one of the best presidents in a long time, you're a liberal. It depends on defining a long time, I have no disrepect for any person who has held office and kept the country together, though I may not agree with what they did, how they did it, or the morals I respect them for at least that. I think that when the time has passed for history to judge Clinton they will find he had a lot of shortcomings in foreign policy, I think that if you understand that what you do to influence the economy takes time one might also blame the current recession on him. But, these are all debatable points, and if you think it, more power to you. I as a conservative can say the man did have some accomplishments
If you think the votes in Florida should have been re-recounted, you're a liberal. I think all the votes should have been recoutned to a single fair standard - I also think that the media reporting the outcome before the election was over should be looked at (and it was). As long as all the VOTES were recounted its all good, just all of them, and none of this I was too stupid to understand a ballot thing.

If you think we jumped the gun when we went to war with Iraq, you're a liberal. I think we acted slowly, and I also think we could have waited.

If you think that religion shouldn't be in schools, you're a liberal. Maybe

And big deal, what if you are called a Liberal, what if some of your ideas are liberal, you act like being called somethign makes it such a big deal. If your a liberal, if your views are based on logically thought out ideas and not spoon fed to you what is the problem with saying yes, this is a liberal view. Why can't we get along and debate the issues, who you are makes little difference as long as you have the reasoning to defend your ideas

If you don't hate france or Germany, you're a liberal.

^^This is one of my biggest pet peeves. So many people hate France and Germany, just becasue they didn't agree with our overly-aggresive war. It reminds me of all the stupid people in my class getting pissed off at the curve breakers because they did the right thing and studied.

I have no problem being called a liberal. It's when people jump to conclusions about what I think that gets to me. My teacher showed the Berg clip to a class with partial permission, and automatically he was labeled a liberal, even though he's a republican. In another thread somebody said that I liked the band Anti-Flag, even though i despise them, just because I'm a democrat. Since you think argueing with statistics is annoying, George W. must be incredibly annoying to you?

... Most people who play the center can say yes to a lot of those? Does that mean they're liberal? Partially... but they could also have conservative views on other topics...

Yeah, that's what I am... I said yes to about half of those... doesn't mean i'm 100% liberal

                    .

Thats not the point. The point is that you get labeled a liberal by saying any of those things. Liberal is the catch phrased used by conservatives to specify anyone that doesnt agree with them. The term liberal no longer has any bearing in the real world, due to its misuse.

1stdeadeye I would be curious as to what your, and FOL's definitions of the term Liberal are. I'm taking no political side in this debate, I am merely trying to understand where both sides come from.
