It also depends on how your judging them, how catchy there music is, unique style, ability to create, what time htere were making music. Its hard to campare styles of different generations since we all like something quite often very different. I think many will agree that Jimi should be near the top maybe not number one, but most people will have him top 5 and thats why overall hes number 1. Everyone loves him. Come on guys, its a poll of opinion.

i understand what you are saying, and i dont know how the list was created by what criteria, but in all honesty, in creativity, ingeneuity, and the trail blazing aspects that made hendrix so influential (besides being the first black artist to lead an all white band) is what makes me feel that tim morello diserves to be atleast in the top 10. The man has created sounds from his guitar, with minimal or no effects, that some people didnt even know were possible.

        THANK YOU!

EDIT: also, Dave Grohl, a drummer mind you, once placed in guitar player magazine in the top 50, kurt wasnt even on the list.

im assuming all this list was, was a big popularity contest

Edit again : BB king isnt even on the list, whats that about? and how can kurt cobain make the list, and IKE TURNER and not even a mention of billy joe armstrong? (given his music isnt hard to play, but neither is kurts or tony iomi's.

also i did not see one mention of Allen Colins... no respect for FREE BIRD? which has been named more than enough times as the greatest solo of all time. How can one of the greatest solos of all time, not even get a mention on the top 100 guitarist list? i mean, it must have been a great guitar player to write one of the greatest solos of all time...

OMFG explain to me how it is that Kurt Nobrains is above Carlos Santana??

they just invalidated the entire list on one shot.

I"m kinda suprised that Gary Hoey isn't on the list. His holiday music is immensly popular but as far as I know his name isn't. Some of original work is quite impressive. Plus he can play all of Hocus Pocus on guitar. Mindboggling to me.

It's not a bad list, it just has the wrong title. It should be called, "The 100 Most Popular Guitar Showmen of the Last 40 Years."

A few things that strike me as interesting:

*If you didn't sell a lot of records, you're not on the list
*If you're too old (or were old at the time you died), you're not on the list. B.B. King upsets the balance there.
*If you're not male, you're not on the list (seriously, why so sexist, Rolling Stone?)
*If you didn't play "Rock", you're not on the list (John McLaughlin, B.B. King... maybe exceptions...)
*List position is based upon "idol" status
*Musicianship be damned, if it's either catchy or too grungy to be understood and therefore easily mistaken as catchy... you're in!

Like I said, with a different title I'd have no problem.

Everyone is plugging their favorites and that's great (I can't really argue with anything that's been said yet), but let's not get too worked up over this. After all, who reads Rolling Stone Magazine anyhow? It's just "People" for the rock scene. Which, let's face it... after the 80's, the rock scene is just incredibly lacking of dynamic personalities. Sure there's some musicians out there, but there's no good rockers anymore. Which probably explains why all those old people are still touring...

And I'll be straight with you. If I had the choice, I'd rather go see KISS than any whiny modern rock band out there today.
                      Before: "You're playing with WHAT?"
After: "Crap! It's that guy with the pump!"

Also, how can Rolling Stone name Hotel California #1 Solo of all time, and not even mention the Eagles anywhere on this list? that seems quite oxymoronic.

Also, where the hell is slash on the list....no where!!! Complete BS!!!!

i agree with most of you, this list is crap
