i dont look for this stuff. when i reformat harddrives, i have to manually go in the slave drive and pick out all the stuff the customer wants.

today i get this FAMILY COMPUTER. the miniPE i use boots finds 14,000 pictures. hmm. quite a collection, but of what? lets see the first few labels...

no, i didnt click it, but after seeing that a few thousand of them are of similar names, it not really that hard to guess what it is.

i dont care what you do on your own time, BUT. my customer said to put ALL of his stuff onto the new partition, where he said he has lots of pictures for work (he sells clothes ironically).

so... ive gotta put all of this stuff onto a computer, accessable by the entire family (mind you the husband, wife, 17 year old son, and daughters)


would you put all of the pictures and files like he said in his new parition all jumbled together (as in the objectional content AND the pictures used for work like he said) ?

im not looking to embarress anyone, quite the opposite, whoever in the family downloaded this obviously took extensive care so it was not found (for the non power user ) so i would assume that he/she doesnt want it found. also, although youll probably say that its not my fault, i would feel somehow responsible if a little kid logged on to find this crap.

I would open a few of those pics to make sure he is not a pedophile. If so, you need to report him to the police immediatly.

First of all... id seriously consider if this is worth losing your job over. the potential is there, and my vote is HELL YEAH IT IS.

can you figure out which user has accessed these files?

when you do that.. call the police and let them review the files and have them on hand when the guy expects to pick his PC up.

pedophila is a capital crime in my book, and if I knew I could get away with it id consider it open season.

Its kiddi porn, you may be under a legal obligation to report it. Certainly moving it or having anything to do with the files could cause you legal issues. I would report it to your boss, or if its not a case of your boss directly to the FBI (look up the field offices). Not reporting it, and moving those files, likely constitutes distribution or facilitation on your part.

i didnt check who accessed the files,but now thinking that the 17 year old son didnt "conviently" forget his password doesnt seem so "convient"

nah, aside frompossibly being an accessory after the fact (which i wouldnt be) there is no legal obligation.

i plan on reporting it to my boss, and possibly having a tech thats been there longer deal with it, really dont need this messing up with my college attendance

Don't touch the files. Walk away from the computer and call the cops. No joke. I'm an InfoSec professional. Child Porn is not something to joke about or deal with in any way. You don't want to investigate further. You don't want to do anything more on that machine. Simply walk away and call the cops.

100% correct. Don't even power down the machine, just leave it as it is and get them over there ASAP.

If you are going to get fired for reporting child porn you don't want that job.
Most likely you will not get fired. What company wants "ignores child porn" associated w/their name?
I think you should tell your boss what you found & ask him to call the police. That way, whatever happens, you are not responsible either at work or legally.
If your boss does not contact the police you should do it yourself (for both moral & legal reasons). The best thing might be to go to the police station & explain to a police officer what you found, that you are worried about losing your job, etc. The police can tell you what your rights are as far as your job goes & what the correct course of action is.

Even if it's not child porn it was most likely downloaded under the belief it was & given that there are children in this family something should be done to make sure they are safe.

You are not at fault here - you are a citizen who has knowledge of a crime (a serious one) and that knowledge was not obtained illegally. You aren't going to be in any trouble for reporting it.
The worst that can happen is you are wrong & whoever those files belong to goes home a bit embarassed at the end of the day.

Whatever you do, don't lie to the police about who found it. Tell them exactly what happened. If it comes up in court that you made a false statement about how or who discovered it, it would be...messy.
