Glickman Don't let these guys get to you. You did fine. Reporting it to your manager was fully acceptiable. It's a tough situation. You showed your management that you were a stand up employee.

sad to see that people still believe that professionalism cant be found in young adults.
I never said you didn't care. If you didn't care, you wouldn't have posted this.

As far as what you really did, there is no way for me to know what you really did. That's why I posted what I did. You come back here in a month with a story about how the guy got put away, and I'll believe you. But from the way you talked during this thread about not wanting to get involved because your JOB???? may be on the line? I just have to wonder. A minimum wage job (or barely better) is NOT worth letting a pedophile off the hook for.

And yes, I sincerely hope you DO prove me wrong. That's the whole point of my post. Get you mad...mad at me...I don't care. Just get you passionate about doing the right thing and following through. The cynicism is faux.

I totally believe young adults can be professional. And I believe you are MORE than capable of being a mature adult about this situation and doing the following:

      1. You've reported it to your boss.
      2. He has said that he will contact authorities.
      3. You can follow up on that to make sure your boss does contact authorities.
      4. Contact them yourself if your boss does not.

One way or the other, the police need to know about this. That's what I'm on about.

wow, everyones being a jerk about this.

steelrat - i usually agree with you, but not here. think this through.

if glickman goes to the police first, what will his boss think when the police just show up at the computer store? that doesnt seem like the best situation to be in. if i was the store owner, i would be mad at the employee for not bringing the situation to me first.

if he brings the situation to his boss, its his boss's responsibility to bring the matter to the police, and he wouldnt do anything else. even if his boss didnt have great morals, he would still call the police. his employee knows about the situation and could contact the police himself if he did not, in which case the boss would be guilty of ignoring the situation.

beam - i doubt glickman is that much of an idiot. why on earth would someone post on an internet forum about something like this, and then NOT report it? he was asking for advice, if he was going to just move it onto the new computer he would have done so and not posted at all (if he did that anyway, he would still be able to call the police, but that is another matter). now that he has posted it, the police could find it or someone on this forum could report it to the police, in which case glickman could get into a lot of trouble for letting the matter slide (i think slarty was pretty good at reporting things he wasnt involved in, is he still around?)

You misunderstood me. What he said is that he told his boss about it, and now wants nothing else to do with it. I never said he couldn't tell his boss first, but he is still obligated to make sure it is reported to the police. Essentailly, he said that he told his boss, and it was up to him to decide what to do with it. And frankly, that just isn't acceptable. Plus, he has a obligation to make sure the police understood exactly what role he played in the whole thing. Leaving out his involvement could have very serious ramifications should it go to trial.

Here, let me quote him again.

did i shrug this off and just do the reformat? no. i let my superior contact the police. how this is like kitty i have no idea.

even better, theres no way of getting fired if my boss contacts the police. i couldnt say the same if i had contacted the police without him knowing.
Thats not what you said in your earlier post. And frankly, the whole "I don't want to get involved" thing is a poor attitude to have. I hope you are never subjected to a crime where witnesses don't want to "get involved."

your taking what im saying too literally. if i did want to get involved i wouldve just reformatted the computer not saying anything. you see thats not the case. what im saying is that i dont not want to have to be police contact, where they have to spend hours upon hours interviewing and filing paperwork. if i need to be interviewed, thats fine.

but if there is a perfectly capable and willing adult manager, why should a 17 year old whos still balancing school, work, and condescention deal with it. (ive been interviewed before by detectives and it took alot more time because they kept going over the same things as if i didnt understand)

thanks for the support slade, and ill agree, i usually agree with steelrat as well.

probably my miswording, but i hope its understandable now

what he said. theres often a difference between the literal interpretation of one sentence a person writes, and what they mean. if he was going to look the other way, he would have already done it.

Thats a better explanation. Sorry if it seems like I over-reacted, but child pornography is one of the worst crimes out there, and I feel rather strongly about the whole issue. I think it is perfectly fine that your manager be the primary point of contact, and you make yourself available for interviews.

Crime is something everyone must take a stand on. Policing is only viable if society as a whole is willing to take a stand against crime.

Thanks for at least caring enough to bring up the subject in the first place. One of these days you will have kids, and what you are doing now will seem even more important then.

Again, I apologize for my confusion on the matter. Good luck in the new job, thats a hell of a way to start

Not necessarily true. I have seen plenty of people floating ideas on this forum involving issues of morals and legality. However, now that I understand where Glickman is coming from, I have apologized for over reacting.

Look at the pictures. Decide whether or not it is criminal. If so, call the police. If still unsure, call the police.

To me, this is the same as a photo place developing pictures of nude persons. If the person(s) are underage, its a crime.

Child porn is evidence of a crime. Tell your boss, then if he doesnt, tell the police.

i was actually wondering about that. would it be a crime if the person in the photo was underage, and the person who took the photo was underage?

what if an underage person took a picture of him/herself?

YES - a person underage cannot consent to sex, or sexual acts - including inclusion in pornography.

well, nudity isnt sex or sexual acts, and i was wondering how it would effect the situation if the person took the photo him/herself or it was taken by someone else underage.
