I'm getting really upset with the perception by some people associated with this website/forum that the discussion of some free ideas are outside the scope of free speech and even though this website it owned by someone (namely AGD) that they talk of always wading through all the bull but then a certain person comes on the site and no one is allowed to speak their mind. I would have to say that some people are going to have to look inward at their selves and not be so hypocritical in their assumptions on this site. I don't care if you feel that something is not up to your liking, but unless the offending poster made a rude or out-of-character remark I feel that you must not edit this persons post just because you do not agree with the contents. If you feel that this is not true than you are no better than the people you are trying to expose. I'm sorry that you feel that you have to extend the popularity of this site at the expense of it's credibility. And if this is true I think you should lose your job. I'm sorry but that is the way I feel and if you feel that this post should be deleted I think that AO is no longer the place for free and creative ideas. If this is really what is going on I would like to officially rescind my membership to AO. Thank you.

I agree. But if you say something like what I'm thinking you are talking about, you better be darn ready to confront flaming and show some good evidence in support of what your saying. If you just randomly says things, then it should be deleted. But if what said is actually ment, let the person argue. -
i think in some cases opinions should not have been stated in the place that they were. that does warrant editing/deleting the post.[*img]http://www.browndotdesign.com/Xodus/AO/YeahThatsMe.jpg[/img]

almost..but not quite
First of all, when someone calls for a "Welcome to AO", they are expected to get it. And they are entitled to be welcomed, just as if it were you or me. Start your own thread if thats what you want to do. Dont ruin some elses moment of glory. My motto has always been "the more the merrier", so WELCOME BEA!...and I cant wait to meet you!

Then if you feel the way you do you must also take the good with the bad and accept that that is the way life works...we don't get to edit what we say and do in life. And as far as you saying that the thread was not the place to discuss our opinions; this whole forum is for people to discuss their opinions. You cannot tell people that everyone that Ao is the place to discuss free ideas and then censor the people that do; it doesn't work that way.Comment

People editing/deleting posts that have what I can describe as having content that the mod does not agree with, not necessarily vulgar content, but just a post that contains ideas that the mod does not agree with. That I do not tolerate and I think smacks of being hypocritical; I don't even want to see certain mods call people out for double-talking when they are the ones doing it more than anyone.Comment

ya i kinda agree with that... its wrong for them to change my post, as long as its within the rules... but then again they are the mod and thier word stands, kinda like a internet ref... im gunna have to be swiss on this one... thanks for clearifing"You have not converted a man because you have silenced him." -John Morley

I think what is important to realize here is that this online "community" is a money maker for AGD (just as any active online pro-company X forum will be).
"Open discussion" can only happen if it doesn't threaten that source of income.
Therefore you get certain obvious rules, like no racial slurs, but there are unspoken (or at least un-published) rules that must be enforced as well. This isn't only comming up with the "Bea Welcome" thread, but when opinions (which weren't 100% pro ADG) were voiced about the Online-Party, they were quickly edited or deleted, and the participants shamelessly attacked by the masses of "AGD Kids."
My only suggestion is that if you want a true speak-your-mind community, you'll have to find a non-corporate forum to do it on.
I wont shamelessly plug my favority communities here, but you can find some if you do a quick search.
So we'll see how long this thread lasts. Personally I give it until the end of the night.Comment

if anyone would like to discuss this issue further in a non-(heavily)moderated chat room you can just hit up the IRC chat room on my website, http://pages.prodigy.net/danlathum and go to the page titled chat. I'll be in there waiting for anyone that wants to debate on the scenario we have here...Comment

I may have missed something but isn't that what rules are for? To maintain order. What place other than the internet is worse about spreading half truths and opinions as facts? Some people are naive enough to believe whatever they read as facts. They usually continue spreading these ideas and tell others where they read them. Once others realize that they don't know what they are talking about the credibility of that person and their source are trash. Just an idea.Comment

And what is worse: half-truths from a community of people who can be corrected, or half-truths from a company who then edits everyone else's opinion?Originally posted by ChucktheMAGician

Whether or not AGD is involved in anything shady is irrelevant, open disussion breeds truth, "Supporting the Corporate Line No Matter What" does not.Comment

there was a certain incident that was related to me, that is now thatnkfully over :) that has to do with this except none of it was deleted...I almost with if was because it was embarrassing to me because it was a big misunderstanding and alot of people got mad and hot and heavy and the words were flying...I wish it wasn't there...but on the other hand, like you said, it is something that happened, and maybe things can be learned from it...I don't know what happened in this incident, but I've seen bits and pieces of people talking about it...and I just hope there was reason and that now one was just being rude and all...
it is embarrassing to get "crapped" on infront of many...so, just try to keep things that are offensive on a personal level...that way, if it is a misunderstanding, then you can work it out before others get into it and it blows up!

Well..Devil I apologize for anything anyone did to you, but you have to realize that what you said was a misunderstanding and what people say is going to be based off of that misunderstanding. And as for the situation with a certain celebrity. She is a celebrity so she should expect to be attacked when she does something stupid. People are going to attack what you stand for and that's what the First Amendment provides us. I don't agree with people spouting out cuss words, but if you simply disagree with my opinion; I'm sorry, but if you're offended because I disagree with what you stand for then maybe you might want to look inward a little more than you have and see if you really believe what you stand for. As they always say "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."Last edited by DiRTyBuNNy; 11-28-2002, 07:41 PM.Comment
