BTW don't think I disrespect the military in my argument. My cousin (who I'm very close with) is a pilot in the marines. Of course I don't want him in harms way unless there is no other way (although he probably sees it differently). Besides with this Iraq stuff going on he probably isn't going to get leave anytime soon which means he won't be able to give me the paintball spanking he promised me (the fool thinks his military training is a match for my level 10 retromag!)

If the communists were still in charge we very well could be. The only reason war was avoided was becuase communism is so flawed as a form of government that the USSR imploded first. Remember the headlines "communism defeated" ? Defeat implies a battle took place. Diplomacy is just another tool of war.

As oldsoldier said we are way off topic and we have fired all the salvos we have. We are not going to convince each other. Since neither of us decide foreign policy we'll just have to watch it unfold. If it does come down to war I'll be hoping for a quick and decisive victory (even faster than the last one). If we are all ever at an AO event we'll divide all the tree hugging bleeding heart elitist liberal pacifist fools (your definition) against the conservative meat eating public television canceling hicks and have a battle royale

the reason war was avoided was a little thing called mutually assured destruction. at the time the best way to deal with them was probably nukes, and then the phrase above comes in. they screwed up communism and that why they collapsed, but thats not why war was avoided, no one likes being incinerated now do they =)

communism collapsed because they ran out of money. they just didnt have as much money as we did, and all their subs and planes and nukes sent em under. its not that communism was flawed, it was just that they werent as prosperous. war was also avoided because of the lil thing called the cuban missile crisis, in which we made the deal to remove the neptune... i think missiles from some eastern european country in exchange for them removing the missiles from cuba. that was teh closest we came to war then

Mutually assured destruction will only last so long. At one point in time the Maxim machine gun was considered a MAD device. In the future we will either learn how to significantly reduce nuclear destruction when a device goes off, or we will figure out a way to counter such threats. People look back at MAD with some kind of warm facination, as if it were some kind of victory for world peace. It just simply stopped people from nuking each other for fear that they would lose the battle. Since neither side wanted a defeat, the battle didn't take place. It had nothing to do whatsoever with humanity's growth as a species or some other such nonsense.

M.A.D. was coined during the cold war. what it meant was if russia sent nuclear missiles towords us, our radars and other monitoring devices in northern canada and the area around greenland would pick them up on their signal, giving us enough time to send some their way. if we sent nuclear missle their way, they would notice their path towords them, giving them enough time to lob some at us.

When countries bought the gun they bought it with the idea that it was a weapon so horible that it could never be used on other human beings. Did they call it "MAD", no. It was the same idea, however. When two sides have a weapon so destructive they don't want to use it on each other its a MAD situation, mexican standoff, whatever you want to call it, the name is just semantics. The point is, eventually weapons so horible that neither side will use them, eventually get used.
