National Security reasons?
If it wasn't for the fact that China or other countries make a great deal of our stuff, we would go back to the one pair of pants two pair of shirts, and that is about all we own. We could not afford to buy those things if made in the US while affording the rising price of everything else now made in the US.
Believe it or not, it is survival of the fittest, it is capitalism at its best. The US can not produce certain goods as good as other countries, hence they don't produce them. Cut off international trade, you have mass inflation, mass over use of limited natural resources, and a whole bunch of problems.
Why don't we have strong tariffs, because they are basically illegal. The US just got hit with a law suit because of them, and will get hit by one thanks to the tariff on Canadian lumber.
