I'm a big fan of M-14s/M1As, as well as the FALs, but there is a lot to be said for the lightweight 5.56 guns. But as they say, why not have both?

Frankly, the more I learn about the AR15/M16, the more I am sure that a piston-driven one would be a fine weapon for continued US service.

I will in a few years when I am a United States Deputy Marshal and have some spare cash. Thats right, any weapon for personal purchase and liftime class III dealer licence and liftime concealed carry permit valid in all states (both free of charge). So I will buy one, if of course you still dare me I will finish my B.S. in CJ in two more years (one year early) and get an MS in CJM in one year, and so long as I pass the psych test, I am golden.

And if the Marshal Service wont take me, there are scores of other agentcies that will.

It will be mine.. Oh yes... it will be mine

Marshals do not have Class III "instant" priviledges for personal purchase of F/A weapons. The law is clear, there are no exceptions for requiring possession of the tax stamp. You may, in the conduct of your duties, be required to carry/use a F/A firearm, but that does not give you private possession. Your agency will hold the class III, and you will represent the agency....you won't take it home.

Concealed carry, and use of F/A weapons is entirely dependant on qualifying.

Class 3 dealer license...probably not. Some agencies (not all) have fully-automatic weapons, but I cannot think of one federal agency that lets you buy a select-fire weapon for duty use. Most personal duty-use purchases are limited to handguns. And even if you get issued a select-fire weapon, its not like you can take it down to the range anytime you like and pop off a few rounds. And, unfortunately, I can't think of a single federal agency that fields the G36. Most use MP-5s and M-4s.

And this is just a friendly suggestion, but you might want to shop around before settling on the marshalls service. Starting pay generally sucks, and only a small percentage get to do the neet fugutive search stuff. Most do prisoner escort, guard duty, and courtroom duty.

You are right about the lifetime concealed-carry for federal agents, however. After retirement, you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon into any state.

Woah there, slapnuts! That isn't especially funny, considering that this has happened on a few occasions in the United States. I dont think that would be a particularly constructive way to "protest" the unfair rules. In any case, I would try to talk to some administrative higher-up to maybe make your punishment less severe.
