You have your facts wrong. NOBODY simply walks up on a Hippo or Cape Buffalo without getting killed or stomped into goo.

The video shows a PH giving the killing shot on a WOUNDED, very dangerous animal. It does not show the entire hunt that likely consumed most of a day, or is quite possibly into the second day. Watch the video closely and you'll see blood already on the animal where the client hunter...whether incompetent or a luckless shot, we don't know and cannot speculate....has NOT delivered a mortal wound.

The PH is there---with his huge gun---to stop the enraged beast from stomping everyone in sight to death, which Hippo's and Cape Buffalo are very capable and apt to do....especially when injured. That is all that is going on in the video, other than some silly strutting about by the PH. To his credit, this is part of a promotional video for his ranch and business.

Come on, you can't ONLY ban Squid for this. He definately wasn't the only one flaming. He did do it, and maybe deserved a ban, but permanent? Even though he was a frequently banned member, none were for big infractions or anything like that...

My father recently took a safari to africa with his father and brother(his father was the financial backer) and here is how he describes it(not word for word).

We hunted in south africa. Our PH's guided us on around 400 thousand acres. We hunted both mountainous and plains terrain. The vegetation was predominantly thorny dessert scrub. A day walking would ruin a pair of pants if you weren't careful. Every hour we stopped and pulled thorns out of the bottoms of our boots. I saw several black mambas (the most deadly snake in the world). Hunters should be prepared to walks hours at a time.
PH's were always armed. While the plains game we hunted varied in dangerousness by species, One could never rule out the presence of something harmful even if that wasn't what you were hunting.
The first day I walked four hours before seeing a herd of impala with an exceptable buck. We stalked for another thirty minutes to get within two hundred and thirty yards. It was evident to me that my PH was testing my skill before pursuing any thing likely to charge us.
After having prooved myself to my PH, we pursued blue wildebeast, waterbuck, and the greater kudu. THe wildebeast and waterbuck posed the greastest danger to us because we decided to take them at close range. The wildebeast was taken at twenty five yards. He presented a difficult head-on shot but was starting to charge and left me little choice. The waterbuck was an old, dominant, territorial bull. We rounded a corner just at dusk and saw him tending a cow at fifteen yards. He wasn't pleased to be interupted. Again, THe suddeness of the situation and the relative proximity required a quick reaction. Fortunately in both cases I shot true and the animal fell.

            More to come.

My grandfather returned the following year to hunt Cape Buffalo, solely. These are huge dangerous animals. To give an estimation of size, they are about the size of two fully grown cows. Here are some pictures:

All of the meat at this establishment is donated to the employees and their families(the black population over their is still realy discriminated against in this region, and thus is in bad poverty.) Of it is donated to a local orphanage.

My one little comment regarding the deer population:

To some degree, yes, expansion is encroaching into their habitat. What often is ignored by hippie PETA people, is that Deer do not thrive in forests, they get most of their food from, you guessed it, grassy field type areas. These are actually created by humans, a lot... so we're actully providing them with more and more habitat as communities grow in rural areas and land is cleared.

More and more land, more and more food for the deer. They especially love my Uncle's cornfields just 22 miles north of Detroit...

I've almost hit deer before, most notably was a full grown buck, within the city limits, that had I hit it, would have killed me for sure...

Driving up I-75 in MI in the fall is a very dangerous proposition if you're not paying attention.

Interesting Vid Army, makes me want to hunt something, kill it, and eat it.

I feel compelled to say something...not sure why.
Excellent post and explanation Army, I learned a great deal.

I know that in the US the Deer bag limits are set yearly in each state with help and lobbyists of the insurance companies.
I know this because I have a relative who does just this. They study costs per year of deer/vehicle related crashes and adjust bag limits accordingly. They don't do this directly, they do it by paying the lobbyists to submit these studies to the government and DNR folks.
I really don't know all the particulars of how it works politically but it works along those lines somehow.
I grew up on Marylands Eastern Shore. The Whitetail deer population there now is larger than ever. HUGE. I have never seen so many white tail deer. It is not uncommon to see herds of well over a thousand occupying a field no larger than 10 acres. The population is so large that the DNR now allows hunters to take as many animals as they wish. NO bag limit and it is a 2 week season. The DNR recommends that you call in at the end of the day and report how many and what sex of deer you harvested. I know that not many do that.
My cousin and uncle took 34 deer in two weeks.Seemed a bit much to me. I shot 3 in a morning hunt with them. We cleaned them and delivered them to a deer processing station that take the meat and distribute it to homeless shelters and food banks near Baltimore.

Sorry for the rant. I was trying to explain just a bit on how the bag limits are set here in the US. I respect the PH in the video for putting an end to a wounded animals life quickly and efficiently. I wouldn't want to walk up that close to a wounded deer, not to mention something that could kill me by turning it's head quickly (Cape Buffalo).

If one of the prime reasons for hunting animals is overpopulation, why can't I hunt people?
