IED - Improvised Explosive Device. Home made bomb basically.
"I would like nothing more than to walk around
wearing a shirt with a giant arrow pointing
downwards, but I have this strange feeling
that most people would take it as some kind
of sexual suggestion rather than an attempt
              to infer one's final destination."

MAybe I should have expanded on that IED thing. It is Improvised Explosive Device, as I mentioned but I guess that still needs explination. What some of the Iraqi Insurgents are doing is rigging old artillery shells or explosives so that that they can detonate them on command from a remote location. They vary in sophistication, from blasting caps and wires hooked to a car battery to remote controls like garage door openers. They place these along our most heavily traveled routes and hope they can detonate them when a convoy passes by. We were going out looking for them so we could have them destroyed before they were used. Dangerous business to be sure
They have gotten very creative in their placement. Sometimes imbeded in cement blocks, or in an old tire on the side of the road. We even heard of one being stuffed into a dead dog!
They have become less and less frequent in the past months and the ones we do find are not very big. That is a good thing.

How are you guys taking those things out? Id read that 50 cal sniper rifles were being used to take them out. Seems like a much better idea than getting anywhere near them. Are you even the ones removing them, or just looking for them so engineers can take care of it? BTW, you guys in Mosul are doing a great job. Seems to have calmed down quite a bit lately up there. My guess is that with the attacks around Baghdad now its prolly a lot of outside groups trying to get attention, and hopefully the local populace and government systems are maturing. Best of luck to you guys, keep up the good work and stay safe.

We call in EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) to take care of them. WE just secure the site until it is clear. We do have the .50 cal sniper rifle in the Battalion's inventory and there is talk of using them for just that purpose.
Thanks for the Kudos. We are trying our best.
