I think the only way you are going to find Bush's true motives is by asking the man himself. All the rest of us get is whatever the various news medias choose to filter on down to the masses. Because of this, everyone and their mother can find a different interpretation and have some news organization to back them up.

That said, I'm going to go with the un-cynical (some would say naive) view that Bush is not some crazed ultra-conservative bent on railroading our country into oblivion, but rather a well-intentioned man who is doing his beast to lead our country on what he believes is the correct course. I do not believe everything he stands for, but at least he is straightforward with his views, and doesn't not stop to dicker over the definition of the word "is" (yes, its a cheap shot, sue me.)

Bush's primary motivation is the war on terror and preventing America from being attacked. He wants to kill the enemy, disarm their regimes, and prevent attacks. Everything he does in his Presidency is towards that goal. That's why he does things domestically that conservatives can't stand, to shore up support from those not already in his base. He figured that if he gave in on steel tarriffs the union left would support him on the war. His entire domestic policy is based on the premise that he can "buy" support for his foreign policy.

Bush is very misguided in this belief and for some reason hasn't learned his lesson yet. But Bush's primary concern for his presidency is the war on terror.
Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger

I think that he just wants to finish his dad's business. Also have you ever read 1984. Well somewhere inbetween page 130 and 160 it explains where our country is going.
that is such a chipmunk mentality

Actually, I doubt the scenario presented in 1984 could ever happen in ANY country in this day and age. Orville wrote that book before the internet was invented, and as such could not imagine the impact of such a global equalizer. Right now, I could be surfing a website set up by a Australian living in the outback, while chatting with a teenage girl in Moscow, and at the same time discussing business practices with a businessman in Hong Kong.

In 1984, the government controls EVERYTHING that flows to the people from the outside world. Today, it is impossible to do so. YOu would have to get rid of every computer, telephone, TV, radio, and satellite dish, all while maintaining the public's support of your actions. Then, you would have to take the (likely infuriated) public, and try to take every speck of personal freedom away from them, while at the same time stealing their bank accounts. Sound plausable?

But take heart, dear bokraham. If anything, a Republican president will keep your nasty 1984 nightmares away much better than a Democrat. After all, it is the Republicans, President Bush included, who support the unrestricted access of the average citizen to firearms. And you can't impart a totalitarian government on a bunch of people who want to shoot you in the face.

PS. and yes, this was very far off topic. But I hate it when people come into a thread and throw the same ingnorant comments around, with no supporting evidence or examples.

Bush just had the oppurtunity and the bawlz to take action.

uhm, in case u didn't know, our government is not socialist. thats means that Bush cant get the oil. since the government dosn't run business's, it means little. If Bush wanted oil, he could go into alaska and get oil for nothing. nobody would die either. well, tree huggers might go into mass hysteria.......

This is not an oil story. It was about eliminating a future threat before it became a current threat. If it was about oil, Iraq would become a US protectorate, not an independent nation. We are turning control of Iraq back over to the Iraqi people in a few months. So how is this about oil? For us to control the oil, we would need to maintain control of Iraq, not let them govern themselves.

If we had taken possesion of Iraq's oil resources then I don't think I'd be paying quite as much at the pump.....

Iraq owes us roughly 86 billion, oil should pay for that nicely.
