    best form of martial arts?

I was wondering with the recent craze for MMA (mixed martial arts) going on around the world. What do you guys think is the best form of martial arts or best combination of forms. Might make this another hobby.

I was thinking I should focus on Mauy thai (striking with feet, hands and elbows), Judo (to get in close for a take down), and Jui Jitsu (to work on ground work which at this point is my strongest asset).

I think boomstick to the head is illegal in all MMA events as well as the 50 states.

I know a few world renowned accupuncturists (health nut mommie), anyway, one was the champion of taiwan for 5 years straight and one learned from monks.

Both of these guys, because martial arts is so spiritual too i guess, can move you without touching you. Theyve done it to me. They only teach harmless tai-chi classes to the masses though. Mostly because they say their kung fu is too powerful to teach to anybody that doesnt dedicate their whole life to it, and one hit will kill somebody. Ive seen their apprentices attack them, and its crazy, the guy will be trying to kick him, and hell just grab his toe or something and flip him five feet, barely moving. No ****.

If it wasnt such an involved and spiritual process, id try for an apprenticeship myself, also its sort of against my philosophies and you have-to dedicate your life to it.

Anyway, martial artists like those guys are obviously the most powerfull. But the layman martial arts you listed sound like a perfect list, as long as you have the right build for them and all that junk.

BTW, boxing will stand up to moi thai anyday from what i hear, so consider that.

Also, genuine karate is nothing to be messed with.

im watching royce gracie (ultimate fighting thingy) fight some boxers. he just dove for their legs and they were down seemed like the hardest time he had was with a kickboxer

that would be ki im assuming, ive never thought much of it until a friend brought me down to his dojo. i was most impressed by when one of the guys grabbed my arm, and without pushing down, made me nearly fall to my knees. that and when the sensai blew on me, while trying to choke him, made me feel like i could fall asleep

im not religous at all, but theres something to it...

If you are talking about the first UFC, the one where Royce took the championship without throwing a single punch then I think you should look for ones that are more recent. Because if you look at those guys then compare them to the fighters of today they would get beat down quick. Even Ken Shamrock said his style is one of the past and needs to be updated to compete today.

Ive been training MMA forever man and thats like asking. "Whats the best paintball gun?"

You will get tons of different answers and everyone has a different viewpoint. What it boils down to is what is fun for you and what is convenient/cheap so start off with. Once you really get training and get good at it you will meet people who tell you about other training and influence you. What happened to me was my parents threw me into karate in like the 3rd grade and I liked it and after a few years I grew out of Karate and went into different styles. 9 or 10 years later im fluent in Jiu Jitsu and pretty competitive in a few others like Muy Thai. Actually ide say my best and most fun style is Muy Thai. The style that helps me the most when I get in street fights is probably Jiu Jitsu. Actually come to think of it just being bigger than everyone else helps the most lol. But Jiu Jitsu/other type of grappling is awesome if thats the route you wanna go. The only thing im doing right now is actually Jiu Jitsu mostly I take one knife fighting class a week normally but I havnt been able to kick box because I cracked my foot in January and it really stunted my offseason training.(FOOTBALL)

But yea just look around your area and find something good. If you live in a popular area like I do you'll have more options so just check thiings out. But in my opinion stay away from traditional Karate it is more form/tech/memorization and more dicipline. The funnest place ive ever trained at didnt even have a building. It was in this professional kickboxers garage. Me and a bunch of friends payed him to take us in and beat the hell out of each other for a few months. It was the most intense controlled fighting ive ever done to this day because he really let us go at each other. I think I got knocked out cold(my friends can fight too) like 6 or 8 times with a bunch of cuncussions before I stopped training with him. But if your into crap like that is the funnest thing you'll ever do.

But if your looking for opinions my favorite is Muy Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You have your stand up power fighting and ground fighting. what more could you ask for?

My boxing moi-thai thing was mostly referencing the hand to hand, you still need the other styles for wrestling of course i never said boxing will save you there

Yeah Ki is the japanese version, problem with it is, that it is in a sense(very subjective) a darker version of chi (so is prana), also there are a lot of americans who went to japan to learn under Karate masters and couldnt cut it, they brought back and use a warped version of Ki. Which has sort of infiltrated the "dojos", same problem with chi, but unlike Ki, it isnt extremely difficult to find the real thing.

The chinese call it Chi, and the East indians Prana. I believe Prana is the oldest, then Chi, then Ki. (lol i cant believe i knwo thsi junk).

Tai Chi is in a sense kung fu for healing, if youve ever heard of that.

                      Shooting. It's a martial art.

Hey, I just took a seminar with him after the Pan Ams. He's amazing .

All of the Gracies are though... I met a whole lot of them. They were all really nice and just amazing martial artists. They're jiu jitsu people though. Having studied kenpo and jiu jitsu, I wish my foundation was in jiu jitsu.... I enjoy it SO MUCH.

My teacher is into MMA. Or rather, he was. He was into mauy thai for a while, but it screwed up his elbows and knees (if you have bad joints, I'd stay away from that style). He got into jiu jitsu and now he says he wouldn't go back.

Maybe I'm just biased though. All I know is that I get a great workout, can do so major damage, and come home looking like I have an abusive boyfriend :-D

whats great acutally is the variety of forms colleges offer now(just found out they actually do have MMA sparring as well) , i have a knee problem, so i would plan to stay away from thai and jius jistsu. this is another reason why i like aikido, you can just use your oppodents moving mass against them. looking forward to kendo as well
