got this emailed to me and thought it was pretty sweet:

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

      America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a
      Canadian
television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant
remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as
the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the
      earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were
lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of
dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is
today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United
      States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the
Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and
swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that
hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by

      tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars
into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are
      writing
      about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over
the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any
other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman
on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk
about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but
      > several
      > times - and safely home again.
      >
      > You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the
      > store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not
      > pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them,
      > unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American
      > dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
      >
      > When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
      > through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them.
      >
      > When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke,
      > nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.
      >
      > I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of
      > other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone
      > else
      > raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was
      > outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.
      >
      > Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is
      > damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of
      > this
      > thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled
      > to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their
      > present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."
      >
      > Stand proud, America!
      >

be proud of who we are!! do not allow these acts to diminish your faith on our system and what a great place this is to be. dont allow this act to make us feel weak. Everyone knows we are not and are coming the face the facts this is the last draw for pushing the token whipping boy around. They wanted to test their might and **** with us so they should be prepared to feel the consequences of 250 million supporters, wiht a lot of anger. This is not gonna be no rock throwing competition this is gonna be an *** whupping.

And for anyone who contradicts this before you reply think of this. do you wanna be know as the weak **** who took it again and again with no retaliation? we have to defend this action against OUR country. or face the shame of being paper tigers.

          Message from President Bush...

President Bush proclaims Friday, September 14, 2001, as a National Day of Prayer
and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks. He asks that the
people of the United States and places of worship mark this National Day of
Prayer and Remembrance with noontime memorial services, the ringing of bells at
that hour and evening candlelight remembrance vigils.

          <hr>

National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims Of the Terrorist Attacks
          on September 11, 2001

By the President of the United States of America

          A Proclamation
On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked America in a series
of despicable acts of war. They hijacked four passenger jets, crashed two of
them into the World Trade Center's twin towers, a third into the Headquarters of
the U.S. Department of Defense at the Pentagon, causing great loss of life and
tremendous damage. The fourth plane crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside,
killing all on board but falling well short of its intended target apparently
because of the heroic efforts of passengers on board.
This carnage, which caused the collapse of both Trade Center towers and the
destruction of part of the Pentagon, killed more than 250 airplane passengers
and thousands more on the ground.

Civilized people around the world denounce the evildoers who devised and
executed these terrible attacks. Justice demands that those who helped or
harbored the terrorists be punished -- and punished severely. The enormity of
their evil demands it. We will use all the resources of the United States and
our cooperating friends and allies to pursue those responsible for this evil,
          until justice is done.

We mourn with those who have suffered great and disastrous loss. All our hearts
have been seared by the sudden and sense-less taking of innocent lives. We pray
for healing and for the strength to serve and encourage one another in hope and
          faith.

Scripture says: "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted." I
call on every American family and the family of America to observe a National
Day of Prayer and Remembrance, honoring the memory of the thousands of victims
of these brutal attacks and comforting those who lost loved ones. We will
persevere through this national tragedy and personal loss. In time, we will
find healing and recovery; and, in the face of all this evil, we remain strong
and united, "one Nation under God."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United
States, do hereby proclaim Friday, September 14, 2001, as a National Day of
Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11,
2001. I ask that the people of the United States and places of worship mark
this National Day of Prayer and Remembrance with noontime memorial services, the
ringing of bells at that hour, and evening candlelight remembrance vigils. I
encourage employers to permit their workers time off during the lunch hour to
attend the noontime services to pray for our land. I invite the people of the
world who share our grief to join us in these solemn observances.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of
September, in the year of our Lord two thousand one, and of the Independence of
the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-sixth.

          GEORGE W. BUSH
"The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy and drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears and to gather to your bosom his wives and daughters." - Genghis Khan

Riotz made it for me, at my request.

My cousin is a retired NYFD Lietenant who was part of Rescue Company 1 for many years.

For those of you who don't know, Rescue 1, who have often been highlighted on shows such as Rescue 911, are an elite response team who covers most of manhatten. Their job is to respond to any major event that requires capabilities beyond that of normal firefighters. They carry all sorts of rescue gear, in specialized trucks. There are 5 such companies, i believe, spread throughout all the boroughs.

Naturally, Rescue 1 was one of the first to respond after the initial plane hit. Sadly, it was during shift change, so both 1st and 3d shift firefighters responded. Roughly 2/3's of the firemen assigned to Rescue 1 were buried when the towers collapsed.

While I don't have exact numbers, as far as I can estimate, there are around 16-17 members of Rescue 1 buried in the rubble. When I was growing up, I would occasionally visit my cousin, ride the truck with Rescue 1, watch them in action, etc, etc.

If you really want to use the image, email [email protected] and ask him permission. He is hosting the image on his server, and I don't want to volunteer his bandwidth without his permission.

Also, I'd like to say that I think its more appropriate for most people to use Shartley's graphic. The only reason I am not is because I personally know the people involved the graphic I am using. Rescue 1 aren't the only people who have given their lives.

If you do know of a specific group of heroes you would like to remember through a signature image, I'm sure shartley or riotz would be happy to help, and if they cannot, I'll volunteer my own graphics knowledge, even if it isn't up to par with thiers.

I was asked to put these up by our good member Gambit1106. Very moving.

Interesting comment I heard yesterday on the news by someone I cannot remember his name but worthy of thought today I think.

                      It was something like this...

"Equating all terrorist as representative of all Muslims is like equating The Grand Dragon of the KKK as representative of Christianity"

                      Also another comment...

"These were not devout Muslims. They were drinking in Bars. How can they claim to be so holy and right when their own religion condemns this very act? They are hiding behind religion to justify their terrorist acts. Missusing it. Even Muslims are appalled at this."
