Hybrids like the Prius don't fall into the "plug it in at home" electric cars category. While in itself it is a technological advancement, the reality is the car company's are losing money on every one of them simply to get in the market. I don't count them as economically viable, either for the company or the consumer.
Now when fuel cells hit the mainstream in 10 years or so, THAT will be a huge step away from oil.
The infrastructure to support this has got to happen, and I think I'd even support some limited federal interaction with the private sector to get it done. We're talking a massive massive undertaking that will reach into the billions of dollars to get in place to support this.
