I'm talking about pure electric cars there, not self contained hybrids.

Hybrids like the Prius don't fall into the "plug it in at home" electric cars category. While in itself it is a technological advancement, the reality is the car company's are losing money on every one of them simply to get in the market. I don't count them as economically viable, either for the company or the consumer.

Now when fuel cells hit the mainstream in 10 years or so, THAT will be a huge step away from oil.

The infrastructure to support this has got to happen, and I think I'd even support some limited federal interaction with the private sector to get it done. We're talking a massive massive undertaking that will reach into the billions of dollars to get in place to support this.

gtrsi: I understand where you're coming from. There will always be a need for oil and oil products, but having the fuel source be hydrogen rather than gasoline will tremendously lower the need for mid east oil.

My jab at people having issues with hydrogen is just that, a jab and indicative of Facts' Rule Of Life #3; Idiots tend to congregate.

I still to this day see people smoking while they fuel their cars....

But taxing people to force them into a car that YOU like can not be an answer. I mean hey, I friggin HATE boom boom cars with thier ungodly loud stereos driving by my house, should I try to get a tax on stereo equipment that goes over 100db? Hell no!

... though of course it should be perfectly legal for me to light up their passing cars with my E-Mag in protest

Hydrogen safe? Ask the Hindenberg about that one.

HYdrogen has far too many problems to be practical now.

        As for KB: the Caribou!!!!

Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger

I'd be happy to give them a warm place to hide...

I was being sarcastic. Hydrogen has too many problems now to be practical. Storage tank size. Evaporation on warm days, etc..... FUel cells will be the only practical way to make it work and we are not there yet.

I dread the day when i go off a curb and f up my fuel cell, i can only imagine what that would cost initally (even if production of a fuel cell was cheap we would still likely pay high costs to subsidize the infrastructure cost), and whether insurance companies would even cover that. I know right now for the poor bastards with full electric cars, once the cells are shot you may as well buy another car. When do you think they will have fuel cells for small electronics? i recall speculations about fuel cells in laptops and cell phones and such, though a fuel cell cell phone might make your pocket sweaty.
