When I was younger, we wore our "Sunday Best" to church every weekend. You paid attention or got whacked. The alter servers dressed very nicely.
Today was just the last straw. Half the church was dressed at least in "nice" clothes if not suit. THe other were wearing Jeans, jerseys, T-shirts, etc.... A teenage girl in the row in front of us was wearing hip huggers and a belly shirt. Now normally I would not be against that
, but in church????
Little kids were playing Gameboys. It's just sad. People like that used to be the oddities in church, now the well dressed and behaved families are.
What happened to class?

Why isn't the priest/preacher doing something about this? If he is condoning it, it will not stop.

I'll agree that video games in church should not go hand and hand. As for attire, I see no problem til it get's to overally revealing clothes. (Short skirts, low cut shirts etc) Shorts and jeans aren't bad unless they have holes or are torn and tattered. T-shirts that don't say things aren't bad either, although button up is prefered. I think for the most part, if people are going to be forced into going (younger kids usually are) they compromise by being comfortable. Overall I think it depends on the church and how accepting people are. Which I personally feel, should be accepting of everybody. Even the non religious people such as myself.Sorry, I'm oldComment

Ok I think this thread has gotten way off topic. I think the real reason behind this thread is not 1DE's concern about the lack of class and social respect, but rather about the guilt that 1DE feels for having dirty thoughts about teenage girls in hip huggers and belly shirts (in Church).
Now this is not his fault because those girls are probably pretty damn hot, and Im already having dirty thoughts.....but hey im not at church. But i digress....the fact that he probably felt guilty, indicates he knows what he did was wrong and can be forgiven...even if he was sporting wood, while saying Our Father.
Now im pretty sure 1DE is Catholic...and if i remember correctly you just gotta jump into the confessional with the Padre and tell him everything and badda bing....youre golden.....
1DE: Forgive me father for I have sinned.
Priest: What transgressions have you commited my Son?
1DE: I have thought impure thoughts about a girl in church last Sunday.
Priest: Which girl?
1DE: uh...she was wearing these low rise jeans and a belly shirt..
Priest: The one in the second row....with her lace thong showing?
1DE: Yeah
Priest: oh yeah she was damn fine!
1DE: thats what im talking about!
*highfive*
...and everyones saved.

Now should people dress appropiately for Church? Yes they should. I still dont think that whatever god you pray to be it Zeus, Allah, Jehovah, or Jack Daniels, really cares how you are dressed. But you should dress nicely out of respect for the people around you and the setting you are in. Like you wouldnt wear pajammas to a movie, you wouldnt wear shorts to eat at the White House, and you wouldnt wear pants if you were meeting Governor McGreevey. (eh..new jersey joke....i shouldve said Michael Jackson).

Where I grew up, people in my church didn't have a lot of money, and no one wore suits except maybe the minister. People generally dressed as nice as they could, though, and always clean. That's just respectful to the people you are gathering with, and to God. Not that I think He would be offended by a prayer made from an unwashed person.
So, I have to agree with 1DE on this one. Church is by it's nature a generally semi-formal occasion. Structured, quiet and reflective (except for the hymns, of course). Between you and God, He doesn't care. But if you can manage better, clothing which is loud or sexy or dirty or torn is disrespectful to the people with whom you gather. When you take your family to visit someone's house, don't you dress the kids in clean clothes?
The gameboy is right out. There is no point in being in church if you are playing games, or with toys.

It's not right to play Gameboy in church, but the fact is, not many kids under 7 or 8 can understand sermons. The parents should either take it away or leave the kid home then, because church is neither the time or place to do it.War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength
